Microscopic traces of blood found in DD9’s urine sample - no UTI. Worried!

DD has had two instances of wetting the bed in the last 10 days (completely out of character) and so I have taken her to the GP. He did a urine test to check for a UTI and then came back in, wondering if she had started her period. He said there was tiny traces of blood in the urine so they’ll send it off to the lab. He also said there was no sign of UTI. I tried to ask what would have caused that and then he started saying something about false negatives and I got confused.

Im just wondering if anyone here knows what sort of thing could be causing this?

Im very grateful for any help. I did a quick google and it obviously told me the worst possible scenario, so I would appreciate any advice from mums who have maybe experienced this.

Thank you.

Prob either a false result - tests aren't 100% accurate. There's always a % that will test positive for blood even when there's none or contamination eg tiny amount of blood on her hand (or yours) when you collected the sample.

On its own it means nothing at all & there's no serious condition that would cause a microscopic amount of blood but no other problems.

The lab results will give more info if there's an infection but if not then completely normal

As a child I had iga nephropathy which causes blood in urine. As an adult I was then diagnosed with thin basement membrane nephropathy (that one is a genetic condition)

both conditions have blood in urine, I also have protein in it as well

edited to add this was found as a child because I started bed wetting

It's very commonly not anything 'serious', can be a false positive (things other than blood can trigger the dipstick to show positive for blood), if it is blood it typically goes away without pin pointing the cause - in an otherwise well patient essentially urine is retested after 1 or 2 weeks and normally has stopped.

Some simple causes can be trauma - vigorous wiping after going to the toilet.
Caused by simple viral infections that occur in sore throat etc - slight irritation of the kidneys which would settle without needing treatment.
Rarer causes can be excess calcium from something like high salt/meat diet (hypercalcuria) - bit like kidney stone.

Easily said but don't worry too much on it, they'll be a GP follow up once lab results back which will confirm/deny whether it's actually blood.

Thank you both. That’s reassuring. It’s just, coupled with the bedwetting, I’m a little concerned. I suppose it could maybe be a false negative for the UTI??

Could be a false negative. Does she have any other uti symptoms?

I suppose it’s the sudden bed wetting and then the microscopic traces of blood in urine. She isn’t having any discomfort weeing, but she is one of those kids who is frequently at the toilet, so it’s hard to tell if there’s been any increase on that front.

Hopefully it’s a false negative but I’d just wait for the results to come back and definitely do t read anymore google lol

I have had a negative before then few days later a positive. Symptoms got worse. Was very annoying as I new i had a uti from get go

neverbeenskiing · 16/06/2025 18:40

I always test negative when I have a UTI, I'll be going all the time, in pain, urine will be visibly cloudy and but just doesn't test positive. GP knows to just ignore and give me the antibiotics when I tell them I've got a UTI now!

SweetSwimmer · 16/06/2025 22:43

i did see that the urine didn’t appear cloudy. Not sure how obvious it would be if there was an infection present.

Those tests are rubbish and only pick up 50% of infections. A urology consultant told me this. I also often have microscopic blood in my urine and have done so for 20 years. Had all the tests and no one can explain it. Obviously can't be anything serious in my case!

Didimum · 16/06/2025 23:00

Did you get the lab results back saying negative? My daughters was negative at GP with dip test, but came back positive from lab.

SweetSwimmer · 16/06/2025 23:10

Not back from lab yet @Didimum - it was just the dip stick test that was done today. I’m sort of hopeful it’s simply a bladder infection and some antibiotics can resolve it all.
