To think that for a roast, gravy should be in a jug, not poured all over before serving?

Was at lunch today in a pub, had the roast. They all come out with gravy poured on the food!

I sent mine back!

Surely, as gravy is quite a personal preference... I only like it in yorkies, roasts and only some neat. DH has a soup 🤣

would you not just put the jug of gravy on the table at pubs etc?

Totally agree! You can’t decide gravy for someone else!

I love it but my DC would not appreciate gravy all over their dinner.

Eldest DC doesn’t like gravy making the roast potatoes soggy.

Bloodylovecheese · 15/06/2025 21:20

Same as milk in tea, never pour for someone else. It's the law

Buffypaws · 15/06/2025 21:21

Yea it’s infuriating when that happens

Dartmoorcheffy · 15/06/2025 21:21

Simple solution. Just request your gravy to be served in a jug.

But I guess the point it they shouldn't have to - it should be obvious not everyone likes gravy/the same amount of gravy.

I don't necessarily dislike the taste of gravy, but never put it on a roast dinner. I would also have an issue if my dinner came out with it smothered already.

BeautifulPeopleGo · 15/06/2025 21:24

My MIL would have sent it back because she likes her food as dry as a bone.

TeaAndStrumpets · 15/06/2025 21:35

I always heat the gravy jug with the plates, so the gravy can go to the table piping hot.

Hkakge · 15/06/2025 21:37

Yes I hate this, poured over everything and starting to congeal by the time it reaches the table. Revolting. I always ask for gravy in a jug.

I wouldn’t send it back purely because the gravy was already poured unless I had specified otherwise.. that’s a bit of a dick move. I do agree I’d prefer to pour myself.

HeddaGarbled · 23/11/2025 20:30

Depends how posh the pub is. My opinion is, if you don’t like gravy, you’ve no business having a Sunday roast in a pub.

TheNightingalesStarling · 23/11/2025 20:41

In a restaurant, I think it would be rude to send it back if you didn't ask for it to be served separately. Its a waste of food.

SeaAndStars · 23/11/2025 20:44

I'd be happy either way.

Had a fantastic roast in York last week, came with the gravy on, fab gravy with little onions in.

TheNameWasOnceChosen · 23/11/2025 20:46

I take the gravy that's served and a jug full of gravey. Yum.

ScrambledEggs12 · 23/11/2025 22:01

At home my OH pours it on as he knows how much gravy each person likes.

In a pub/restaurant, or at someone else's house (or if we were entertaining other people) should be in a jug.

dailyconniptions · 23/11/2025 22:04

It should be in a hot gravy boat, not a jug or poured all over the food.

mismomary · 23/11/2025 22:09

Absolutely gravy should be in a jug. No one permitted to pour my gravy. We all have our own way of pouring!

sweeneytoddsrazor · 23/11/2025 22:26

I think its very unusual for the gravy to come out in a gravy boat nowadays, mainly seems to be carvery that it is served separately. I think most people tend to request it separately or say no gravy at the point of ordering

Tinkerbellflowers · 23/11/2025 22:27

I am team jug. Ive bought an insulated gravy jug with lid for the christmas dinner table, so I am hoping it stays piping hot!

OhDear111 · 23/11/2025 22:36

We have a friend who sends every meal back for some reason or another. It’s just one complaint after another. She’s just started to ask for separate gravy after years of not seeming to worry. It’s her latest fad! It will be something else in 6 months. We try and avoid going out with her now. It’s just too stressful. These are cheap pub meals, not Michelin starred restaurants! And we certainly won’t be going anywhere decent with her. She wants tomato ketchup with everything. Like a child. Aaaagh!

PrincessOfPreschool · 23/11/2025 22:38

DS (20) hates gravy and would not eat if there was gravy on.

mamagogo1 · 23/11/2025 22:39

It’s 50/50 I find , if not more pour onto dinner. Depends on price point, cheaper places ladle it on

ClaudiaWrinklemum · 23/11/2025 22:44

Absolutely yes! I always ask for my gravy in a jug even though my friends all think I’m a twat. I need to be in control of my gravy!

ilovepixie · 23/11/2025 22:53

If it says on the menu served with gravy I would expect it to be on the food. Just ask for the gravy to be served separate. Simple! Don’t be a dick about it.

WhatIsTheCharge · 23/11/2025 23:00

Yeah - if it’s a pub/restaurant, I’d expect my dinner to arrive gravy-less with the gravy in a jug.
Same if I’m cooking for guests at home, I’d serve the gravy separately. When it’s just me, DH and kids, I gravy everyone’s dinner because I know how everybody like theirs and then there’s one less thing to wash 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

My kindred spirit! I like a bit of roast with my gravy 😂

Though if I was cooking for people in my home, I will do a jug for everyone to pour their preferred amount (and a jug for me to put my portion in 😂).
