Dirty wine glass in restaurant

Just back from holiday in Italy. Full board. At dinner one night, we ordered a bottle of wine. Noticed as the waiter was pouring mine, that the glass was dirty- lipstick marks from previous drinker around the rim. I pointed this out. He said 'oh, sorry' and brought me a clean glass to pour it into. I was expecting a fresh drink but was not offered one. I didn't want to drink the one from the dirty glass, so it sat on our table until we finished our meal. Therefore, we were a glass down from the bottle.
Was IBU to expect a fresh glass of wine or should I have just poured the original one into a clean glass?

You said it. Just pour original one into the fresh glass. If he had already opened the bottle, I don't know what else he could have done, other than knock cost of a glass of wine off the bill. Not the end of the world is it?

ninjahamster · 15/06/2025 21:09

I would have just poured it into a clean glass.

What are going to do if everyone here says “yeah…you are owed another glass of wine?”

FrodoBiggins · 15/06/2025 21:13

I would just pour it into the new glass. The stained glass probably went through the dishwasher so is reasonably clean, but lipstick is hard to remove. If you wanted a discount from the full cost of the bottle, did you ask?

DoctorRoseReturns · 15/06/2025 21:14

Lipstick doesn't always come off in the dishwasher.

It would have been a clean glass with a mark

You decided not to drink the wine that was perfectly drinkable

ShaunaSadeki · 15/06/2025 21:15

Id assume the glass had been washed but the lipstick hadn’t come off, pour the wine into my new glass and not think any more of it

Flanger · 15/06/2025 21:15

I’d have poured it from the wine glass into a clean one away from the lipstick. If you wanted a fresh glass you could have asked ?

soontobeconfirmed · 15/06/2025 21:18

Why on earth are you still thinking about this?? I'd have laughed, poured the drink into the new glass and moved on tbf.

Pippa12 · 15/06/2025 21:19

Id of just poured the wine into the clean glass. It’s not dirty dirty, just stained with lipstick that doesn’t come off in the dishwasher.

Did you not have a good trip? Why on earth is this still playing on your mind, I’d of thought the good memories would’ve swamped this one?

WithOnlyTheMemories · 15/06/2025 21:23

I would have just poured it into the fresh glass.

What is it about the scenario that means it's still in your head OP? I don't think I would have given this more than 0.3 seconds of thought, unless there was something else going on.

AmelieSummer25 · 15/06/2025 21:24

Lipstick doesn't always come off in a dishwasher, I'd have just poured it into the clean glass and relied on 'alcohol destroys everything!

but seriously, you've just been on holiday to Italy & this us what you're focussing on?!?!

post a photo of a nice view/meal something.

call it whinge tax!

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 15/06/2025 21:26

I also would have just poured it into a clean glass. Why are you still thinking about this? Who were you having dinner with- couldn't they have had the drink if you didn't want it?

Moveoverdarlin · 15/06/2025 21:28

Wouldn’t give a monkeys about this sort of thing.

Cosyblankets · 15/06/2025 21:28

Italy. The land of beautiful food. Fabulous scenery and friendly people.

This situation is barely even worth pausing your conversation about it, let alone still thinking about it when you get home and even less so to create a thread!

StrongandNorthern · 15/06/2025 21:30

'First World Problem'?
And then some.

Whosaidthattt · 16/06/2025 09:02

All fair points! I'll give my head a wobble and remember the fabulous stuff.
