Does a bed in the corner put you off a house?

I'm rearranging my bedroom in the hope of putting my house up for sale in the next year. I want it to look as good as possible. I currently have the bed in the corner as I live alone. I think it's cosy and it makes the room feel so much bigger as there's lots more floorspace.

However I've seen lots of negative comments on Mumsnet over the years about bedrooms looking bad if the bed is in the corner.

So I'm wondering, would it actually put you off buying a house if the bed is in the corner?

I can’t see that it would be a problem as long as it’s obvious that it’s possible to have the bed in other positions - the potential purchasers aren’t buying the furniture.

WelcomeToTheBlackParade · 15/06/2025 10:55

Just have it in the corner for now and move it for the sale photos if you think it would look better 🤷‍♀️

JabbaTheBeachHut · 15/06/2025 10:56

I'm not going to be put off buying an entire house because someone chooses to put their bed where I wouldn't.

But personally I don't think it looks great.

Dangermoo · 15/06/2025 10:56

No, because buyers can reconfigure the room.

dudsville · 15/06/2025 10:57

So long as the room is clearly big enough for the bed to be more centrally placed I wouldn't see a problem with this. When I lived alone I moved my double bed to the corner for the additional space and really loved it!

Ilovemyshed · 15/06/2025 10:57

Its important to stage a double room as a double with a bedside table each side so buyers can see the space. Just for photos is fine.

5128gap · 15/06/2025 10:57

No, because I'd have already looked at the floor plan and would know the measurements of the room, so whatever you did or didn't do, id know how big it actually was. It always surprises me that people making such a huge decision as a house purchase would be swayed by furniture placement and staging rather than the facts about the property. However, enough people seem to think it matters to suggest they are.

Anon765898 · 15/06/2025 10:58

Personally it wouldn’t out me off if I can see that there’s room to move it and still have space but having said that there’s always these people on house buying programmes who reject houses because of wall colours or the sellers own furniture… bloody bonkers and they have me shouting at the TV🤣
Some people just don’t seem to have any vision!

Yes, this for me has been one of the surprises of Mn, which seems to have a disproportionate number of people who can’t see beyond a house’s current decor or furniture arrangement. Or think that the reason someone’s house isn’t selling is because they didn’t religiously hide the shampoo and toothpaste, therefore ‘there’s not enough storage’.

DavidsFavouriteGirl · 15/06/2025 11:03

As long as it's obvious that the room is big enough to accommodate a double bed that can be approached from both sides, you might be OK.

However, people often lack imagination and as the most usual reason for putting a bed in a corner is lack of space, perspective buyers are likely to perceive the room as too small to be a full-size double. This could affect both the value and how saleable your home would be.

I think if you want to show the room at it's best, you should move the bed out of the corner.

JDM625 · 15/06/2025 11:05

Do you mean the bed is pushed over against a wall, or sitting diagonally across the room, starting in the corner?

As long as the photos show the room is large enough for people to get into the bed from both sides, and no one is climbing over the other to get into it, I don't see the problem.

NoisyParakeet · 15/06/2025 11:08

So many buyers cannot envisage a house without the current furniture you should move the bed out of the corner. Another thing I do not like is the bed under the window.

Todayisaday · 15/06/2025 11:10

Yes move it out fkr thr puctures and viewings. Dress the bed too.

Pinty · 15/06/2025 11:11

If that's the thing puts people off they probably weren't going to buy the house anyway.
but if it worries you just move it before you put it up for sale.

ShesTheAlbatross · 15/06/2025 11:16

I think that either you need to move it for the pictures, or make sure your pictures show that there is room for it to be central.

It won’t totally put me off, but if I wasn’t totally convinced by the pictures, a feeling of “oh and the main bedroom can’t even fit a bed in the middle” would push me towards not viewing it.

Everyone thinks they aren’t swayed by these things in the same way that everyone thinks they aren’t swayed by advertising. There’s a reason listings have pictures and not just a floor plan.

saraclara · 15/06/2025 11:23

You have to assume that your audience can't visualise the room any other way. Otherwise you're going to limit the number of people who'll want to view. Just move the bed for the photos. If they come to view, they'll be able to imagine the room differently, much more easily.

I'll admit to being one of those people who struggles with visual stuff. I have different talents, but always get one of my daughters who has that ability, to assist me!

I agreed with this. No one is going to consciously think ‘I won’t buy the house because of where the bed is’.

But it might add to a general sense of ‘this house is pokey and better suited to a single person’.

FancyCatSlave · 15/06/2025 11:24

Stage it for selling with a bedside table each side. It will help for selling. Shouldn’t but it does. A huge number of people have absolutely no sense of space and it’s a really tough market at the moment.

There are literally people that walk amongst us that will turn down a house worth hundreds of thousands (that is the right size/location etc) purely because their current £2k sofa doesn’t fit and they can’t see past it. No imagination or mental flexibility whatsoever.

purpleme12 · 15/06/2025 11:25

I honestly don't understand what's wrong with having a bed in a corner

Because one person has to climb over the other to get in and out. It’s fine if it’s just you, fucking irritating if sharing.

purpleme12 · 15/06/2025 11:28

Oh ok
Wouldn't be too bothered about that

purpleme12 · 15/06/2025 11:28

Plus you'd just go to the bottom of the bed and get out that way

CassieAusten · 15/06/2025 11:31

PP mentions the photos too and this is a good point. We all know estate agents take photos to make it look as though the room is more spacious than it is. If the bed is pushed into a corner then people viewing online may assume, no matter how big the room appears, that it's photo trickery and in fact the bed only fits if pushed into a corner, and decide not to view your house. For the sake of moving some furniture around, it's not worth putting people off if you actually want to sell!
