To think that a school shouldn't insist on skirts ONLY for girls uniform?

A secondary school close to me has changed its uniform for September coming and it consists of skirts only for the girls (long skirts-not sure that makes any difference)-no trousers.

Its caused a bit of uproar in the local papers. It makes me a little uncomfortable.

AIBU to think this is wrong and very out of date?

What, boys should be allowed to wear skirts too? How very liberal of you.

edam · 22/05/2008 22:03

You are right. Why exactly does the headteacher want to see girls' legs? Trousers are warm and practical. Am sure this came up somewhere a while ago and it's breaching sex discrimination laws.

Chaotica · 22/05/2008 22:03

yanbu

LittleBella · 22/05/2008 22:03

No yanbu

It is completely out of date, what on earth is their motivation?

The first case brought by a muslim girl, will overturn the rule anyway and they must know that. But perhaps they're planning to keep muslim girls out?

very very strange.

Chaotica · 22/05/2008 22:04

even better if you can point out that it's against the law

LittleBella · 22/05/2008 22:04

Oh is it really against the law? Can any girl take the school to court?

cheesesarnie · 22/05/2008 22:04

yanbu.at primary school girls had to wear skirts ,my parents argued that as i was so tiny when it was cold i got really cold !ended up i was aloud to wear trousers which i then hated as i was only girl in trousers so got bullied-would rather have been poorly!
it is outdated to think girls have to wear skirts.

ws-my ds1 would probably love wearing a skirt to school!

SlartyBartFast · 22/05/2008 22:05

very outdated

cheesesarnie · 22/05/2008 22:05

allowed i mean

edam · 22/05/2008 22:06

I'd call whatever that thing is that's replaced the Equal Opps Commission - the Equalities Commission? - to check. But I'm pretty sure it is.

Hulababy · 22/05/2008 22:08

Girl's school trousers are generally vile items of clothing though - suprised anyone wuld want to wear them!

Did the school not consult parents before making the changes?

brimfull · 22/05/2008 22:11

I don't have a problem with it tbh.

Mollymom · 22/05/2008 22:14

Don't know if there was any consultation-just read a report in the local paper this evening. Apparently some parents of pupils due to start in September are considering removing their children from the school.

YANBU. this used to drive me mad and still makes me cross now. Even when it snowed, we still had to wear skirts

Seriously hope Equal Ops can get past this one.

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 22/05/2008 22:14

Am pretty sure that Dept for Children, Families and Schools have guidance on uniform on their website and that schools can't prohibit girls from wearing trousers. There's quite a lot of case law too.

Miaou · 22/05/2008 22:17

Gosh I'm glad my local school doesn't make girls wear skirts. My dd1 would be totally miserable in them.

bluefox · 22/05/2008 22:22

Dont think they will be allowed to get away with this at all. Are they stupid???

LittleBella · 22/05/2008 22:22

when you think about it, what a bad example to set children, to break the law.

Extraordinary that the governors allowed it. What will ofsted say?

brimfull · 22/05/2008 22:22

but secondary school students don't feel the cold, they never wear coats so don't think they'd be bothered about skirt

Mollymom · 22/05/2008 22:24

They've just had an ofsted as far as (I can find out. They've got a new head teacher who has (or is hoping to) bring this in.

Made me feel all nostalgic today, seeing all the school leavers out in town, with amusing comments in marker pen all over their shirts. Bless them!

LittleBella · 22/05/2008 22:24

oh only the yobbos ggirl.

The posh ones are properly dressed for the weather.

PeaGreene · 22/05/2008 22:24

What worries me about this, is that if the local papers have already had an uproar about it, and they're still doing it, what next? Local pressure hasn't done the trick. Just how much fuss are you going to have to create? (completely justified but will someone put the effort in which is clearly needed?)

LadyOfWaffle · 22/05/2008 22:25

Our school was skirts only, but I am sure if you insisted you wanted to wear trousers they couldn't do anything about it. Personally I hate trousers and/or shirts and ties on girls at school, to me it looks odd.

madamez · 22/05/2008 22:25

What on earth is their reasoning? I think it's probably illegal as well.
