To wonder why lots of car drivers shout at pedestrians?

just wondered why car drivers scream at people out of their windows? There must be some people on here that do it since it seems a common thing. I was crossing the road today and put my hand up as a thank you gesture but when I got across they screamed out the window “thank you!” I mean I thought I did thank them as putting your hand up is an acceptable thank you gesture or so I thought, are we meant to verbally shout thank you? That seems a bit odd really so anyway there must be people on here that shout out their car window at people so why do you do it? Is it to make
people silly or because you have a car so can quickly speed off?

Indeed, my experience is obviously different from yours, is that hard to accept?

I don’t know is it? You’re the one keep challenging it

When you stated that you need time to stop safely. If you can't stop safely for someone using a zebra crossing, you need to slow down.

Of course DRIVERS not just me need time to stop safely but nowhere did I say as a driver I can’t stop with enough time to do it safely 🤷‍♀️

I've had things like "Fat Cunt" shouted at me once or twice, I put it down to just being common or garden Utter Wankers. Bless.

I shouted at some teens who ran out in front of me causing me to emergency stop. It was really close.

So sometimes its reasonable.

I think you are missing the point here. You are driving along a road with a known hazard. It is YOUR responsibility to drive at a speed that ensured YOU have enough time to stop.

If you don't have enough time to stop safely, you are driving too fast.

I lived in China for a while - to cross the road you step out but looking the wrong way - this ensures approaching traffic slows down -if you look at approaching traffic they assume you have seen them so keep going -you could try this OP

Did you stop at the crossing and wait until the car stopped then use the crossing?

I don’t ever shout at anyone but it does annoy me when people just walk straight out because there’s a crossing, yes there’s a crossing but there’s also a car travelling at 30mph and needs time to stop safely

I always make sure cars are stopping, but surely you have enough time to be able to stop safely when you see someone waiting to cross? It winds me up the amount of drivers who are going so fast and/or haven't even checked to see if anyone's waiting to cross, so they have to slam on the breaks to skid to a halt, or just speed on over the crossing.

Re read my message I said I didn’t say I wouldn’t have enough time. Even if people slow down to 20 in a 30 when approaching a crossing if someone steps out whilst your at the crossing you would still have to stop sharply

As a driver I always slow down approaching a crossing because some pedestrians are unpredictable and don’t wait and will jump out last second, so I always slow down on approach. As a pedestrian I will always wait till the cars have fully stopped before stepping out on to the road

Not shouted at but gestured to go and me refusing to and them having an issue where I live because they don’t have the same field of vision or knowledge of the area as I do.

Too many drivers think they know more than pedestrians when it comes to walking and don’t realise they can be putting us in danger because they don’t have the full picture of risks if you step out when they say. Many assume other drivers will stop on the other side, but many don’t. Add in people who don’t cut down their hedges making it difficult for pedestrians and drivers to see each other, it’s asking for someone (the pedestrian) to get hurt.

I don’t trust drivers whatsoever. I’ve had too many close calls from drivers not paying attention and breaking laws and if I hadn’t been the one paying attention I and my child would have been seriously injured or worse.
It’s usually people running red lights and had some guy in a white van who decided to do a u-turn with no thought to the pedestrians who have the green man and were crossing.

Irreverent but please feel free to start a thread about people who just walk into busy main roads

Well, that was unnecessarily rude, wasn't it?

mindutopia · 14/06/2025 18:22

The only time in recent memory that I’ve shouted at a pedestrian was to tell him that he dropped some of his shopping in the middle of the zebra crossing and had just kept on walking. I had literally shouted “excuse me sir, but you just dropped your shopping.”

He told me to F off. 😂 I hope he got home and had a miserable lunch because his salad and sharing packet of fancy crisps got mushed in the middle of the road.
