To not understand my colleagues reaction?

So to cut a long story short I have recently received a pay rise for learning to run a machine. I have ran this machine with no extra pay occasionally for around 2 years. The other machine operatives where very supportive of me getting paid until I actually got paid and have now made comments along the line of why should I get paid when I'm just doing a general ops job. Which they also do occasionally for cover and still get their money. I will be more of cover for them and they all still make more money than me.
I will not be replacing any of them but whenever anyone tried to step up they try to put a stop to it stating their jobs are at risk....they're not. Aibu to not understand any of this?

They're afraid they'll become unnecessary if you're skilled in this as well as your main job, but they're only skilled in this. But it's none of their business how much you're paid (I'm assuming?) and they're making themselves look petty, so ignore!

You are not at fault for being unable to understand their hypocrisy. Ignore the comments or if they persist after ignoring them, and you feel it will not jeopardize your job, as much as possible say in a non-confrontational tone, "I am confused. You said words of support and encouragement that I get paid to learn the skill, but now you say the opposite. Have I done something to offend you?"

This puts it on them to justify their ridiculous behavior.

I have spoken to one of them, we get on really well and it was actually his brother that made the comment. He even said its fine when he's on general op job but I take things to heart a lot as i really like these people and thought we got on well but obviously not. I know i should ignore but when I was learning I also went through this with one person who actually ignored me. Luckily he is now in a different department

I have only worked here just less than 4 years but I think they all forget that I have 8 years previous experience and have progressed quite quickly compared to most.

Your actions on the job should speak for themselves and given you have received a raise, they are, so do not feel the need to work to get acceptance from people who are acting immaturely and are probably jealous.

Thank you! I'm a big overthinker so not sure that's helping 😂

Why would any of your colleagues be told about your pay rise? It makes no sense.

Honestly, I'm not right sure. People knew before I had mentioned it to the guy I get on with. He was already aware, I'm guessing from our manager who wants him to learn another machine in a different department for cover. I'm not sure exactly what he was told or if he assumed.

It's one of those places where people seem to know everything. Even one of the managers daughters was gossiping/telling people about her dad handing his notice in

Why do they get paid more than you for the same job?

To quote my own username "Why do I give valuable time to people who don't care if I life or I die?
Morrissey called it. Congratulations, enjoy your well earned pay rise.

General ops have a flat rate and machinist get paid per machine. I can currently only run one.
