If you live in a detached house and you close your windows and doors can you hear your neighbours?

Im looking to buy a house soon

Only if they're in the garden/driveway. They are quite a loud family but I can't hear them inside their house unless I'm outside and they have their own windows or doors open

Saysayonara · 12/06/2025 12:59

I never hear the neighbours when I'm indoors with windows closed, and rarely even if the windows are open. I only tend to hear them if we are in the garden at the same time.

But the houses either side are a reasonable distance away as we have quite a bit of garden surrounding the house at the sides. If you had a detached house which was only about 6 feet away from the neighbours then it's more likely you'd hear them.

MellowPinkDeer · 12/06/2025 13:00

Nope.

SJM1988 · 12/06/2025 13:02

It depends on what sort of noise you mean and what sort of layout your street has. And what sort of neighbours you have.
Through the walls obviously not. But I am detached and can hear the house behind playing the radio - even with the windows closed. Drives me insane sometimes but its not all the time so put up with it. Its the low talking volume of the radio that seems to just penetrate the house

JadeSeahorse · 12/06/2025 13:08

Not at all.

As pp's stated, can only hear neighbours if they are mowing the lawn or doing something outside.

PaperSheet · 12/06/2025 13:10

I moved from a flat to a detached house purely to get away from neighbour noise. Best thing I ever did. Now, i am lucky in that most of my neighbours barely use their garden. I have no idea if I would hear them if they were outside being loud. But inside with the windows shut at the moment I don’t hear a thing and I love it. No screaming or balls being bounced around or pounding feet up and down. It really used to sound like it was inside my house. So to be able to have that peace is amazing for me.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 12/06/2025 13:11

No, can't hear them unless the kid is on their decrepit creaky trampoline and the windows or doors are open.

xILikeJamx · 12/06/2025 13:14

You're not really being specific enough about what you mean by 'hearing' them OP.

No - if we're in our house and the neighbours are in their house, we can't hear anything at all.

If they're having a loud party then maybe, but even then not really.

If they're out in their garden on a nice day playing music and chatting, then yes you'll hear them, but I can't imagine that ever really bothering me (and how many days are realistically nice enough for that!)

Whyx · 12/06/2025 13:15

If you look at ex council properties that are semi detached you may find the sound no problem at all. I lived in one semi and never heard the neighbours at all. It was one of those types of houses with massive rooms and very thick walls. Pretty sure it was 1960s/70s build. The build quality makes a big difference. Alternatively I lived in another semi and I could hear the neighbour plugging in their appliances!

ILoveMyCaravan · 12/06/2025 13:16

No we can’t hear them. But it’s a large 1930s detached with plenty of space in between the houses. Not sure it would be the same on a modern estate as they’re closer together.

HelloDaisy · 12/06/2025 13:17

Nope I can’t hear them, even with windows open but they are fairly quiet. On the other hand they can probably hear us as more dc and older so make more noise!
We do have a path and field behind our house that we can all hear kids/teenagers in with or without windows open..

Gundogday · 12/06/2025 13:17

No, apart from occasionally if they’re walking past and chatting loudly.

skymagentatwo · 12/06/2025 13:18

Nina1013 · 12/06/2025 12:54

Yes you’d be unreasonable to stretch yourself to buy something run down. Refurbishment costs a fortune - often in excess of the value it adds, due to cost of labour and materials. Unless stretching yourself would also cover a full realistic refurb cost, you’re just switching one cause of stress for another.

I would 100% disagree depending on the property. We have done exactly this and we have zero regrets, you can do one room at a time their is no rush.

IllBeHomeForChristmas · 12/06/2025 13:18

No not them but I can hear their dogs barking all day long whilst they are at work and the dogs are left in the back garden bored.

BurntBroccoli · 12/06/2025 13:19

No - only if they are in the garden.

Delphiniumandlupins · 12/06/2025 13:19

It partly depends which rooms are next to your neighbours. I've lived in several semi-detached houses and never heard much from next door.

sweetsandsour · 12/06/2025 13:20

No noise at all from neighbours when we’re in our house. We can hear sounds in gardens like lawnmowers etc from neighbours but we’ve never heard any in house noise at all. Our last house before this was Victorian semi and we did hear noise - silly things like light switches being turned on. Occasionally heard voices when kids were misbehaving next door!
Detached is way more private and peaceful.

Hellovation · 12/06/2025 13:20

Id never go back now. The peace is immense.

however i do think a lot of “detached” aren’t really. They’re so close together you can stand between and touch each side then it’s only really dry hard by technicality imo- whilst you won’t hear their light switches or telly; you’ll still hear so much coming and going in summer. But if it’s the internal noise that bothers you then of course that will still be a squillion times better than a semi detached.

I’d rather live in a small detached than a larger semi for sure.

we’ve been detached for 8 months now and the fact I’ll never hear them drag their table across the floor or hear them having sex 🤢 ever again makes me all the dust and grime from having to renovate worth it.

SocksShmocks · 12/06/2025 13:20

Our (detached) neighbour’s son plays the drums. You can hear them when you’re walking past on the street but we don’t hear them inside our house.

YourNextJobCouldBeInCyber · 12/06/2025 13:21

The neighbour opposite the road from us used to play his music so loud I could hear it in my house. He has stopped though. I can’t hear my actual next door neighbours

onceuponatimeinneverland · 12/06/2025 13:23

Noise as such may not be an issue with being detached but other things might be (eg access, building work, party's etc etc)

. Bad neighbours will be bad neighbours even if they are separate to you. Good neighbours can sell up to bad neighbours.

CleverDenimJoker · 12/06/2025 13:27

Thanks

Was thinking I spend ££ to soundproof my semi instead to improve it a bit but I know it wont be as good as a detached

wonkyfruit · 12/06/2025 13:28

We're in London and don't hear anything if we're inside (although we do have quite a bit of garden around the house as do neighbours). Detached makes a HUGE difference to noise levels in my opinion.

CointreauVersial · 12/06/2025 13:29

No....can't hear a thing. Unless we are all in the garden.

ARichtGoodDram · 12/06/2025 13:30

It totally depends on the build of the houses.

Our current detached is brilliantly sound proof. It's a 1920s build with thick walls. Our previous semi detached, build the same as the current house, is vastly more soundproof than BIL's detached new build.

He's detached but you can still hear the neighbours, and the road, and anyone outside. It's awful.
