Raw mushrooms in a salad

When I was a kid, I seem to remember adults eating salads made of finely sliced raw mushrooms. Absolutely revolting.

does anyone else remember this or was it just my family? Maybe you eat them now?

YABU, I never had it until my late DUncle moved in with my late DGM - he always made salads this way: lettuce, sliced tomatoes, sliced raw mushrooms, sliced red onion, balsamic vinegar. Delicious.

I miss him, my DGM and the mushroom salads 😞

I used to live (housemates) with a very hippyish mum who ONLY gave her primary aged child raw mushrooms as a 'treat'. I had to hide in my room if I was eating anything like crisps or biscuits while the poor 8 year old ate her raw mushrooms 🤣

This thread is indeed an eye opener! I love mushrooms but cooked. Never heard of anyone but my aforementioned housemate's child eating them raw.

Such a craving now. Have added mushrooms to my shopping list. Will eat them raw dipped in red pepper houmous.

Raw mushrooms are far nicer than cooked ones.

Big shrooms fan here, I eat them daily. Right now, I have yellow oyster mushrooms and lion's mane and just finished up some maitake. I sauted some of the oyster shrooms this morning for my scrambled tofu breakfast and used them in my lunch salad along with the lion's mane raw.

If mushrooms are spongey they are not fresh.

Mushrooms a la Grecque - food of the gods, especially in late Summer picnics. (some recipes cook the mushrooms but DM always bought firm tiny buttons and marinated them in the garlic oil and herbs)

I was randomly just thinking the other day as I prepared my lunch, how I remembered having raw mushrooms in my salads as a kid in the 90’s!

Agree, how can a raw mushroom possibly be crunchy? They're flabby and spongy.

They need to be really fresh but raw mushrooms can be delicious. Marinated in vinaigrette is good but they still need to be super fresh.

I honestly thought you couldn't eat them raw as they were poisonous. Off to Google now 😂.
