Work owe me £700+ What do I do?

Work owed me 10 hours overtime last month. They said “Don’t worry, you’ll get it next month.”

This month my wages are wrong again and now they owe me 40 hours. It’s over £700. They’ve said again I’ll get it next month. I really need this money.

Does anyone know what I can do about this?

Do you have an email address for HR? Write them a formal email, reminding them of what was agreed previously and how they haven't stuck to this. Tell them how you are fixed financially and how you need and are entitled to the money. Did it cost you anything extra to do the overtime, extra travel expenses, child care costs etc? If so tell them how you have shelled out extra money to go to work and are out of pocket.

Try HR first if not acas should be able to advise you

Raise it e8th hr. They can do an advance and then the tax adjustments will go through next payday.

They can run payroll again. Don't let them fob you off.

Thank you everyone. That just keep telling me to wait to next month. It is so frustrating!

Do you have written confirmation they said you’d get it in this months wage? If so send them it on highlighting you were told it would be this month and you want/need the money you’re owed.
inform HR and if they fob you off with promises of next month raise it with ACAS and see what they advise.
could this cause any implications with the amount you pay in tax if they keep “forgetting” and pay you in a lump sum?

Speak to ACAS or Citizens Advice and ask for advice on how to sue your employers for wages owed.

I used to work in HR with someone who would cock up overtime payments fairly regularly and say it didn't matter as it would be sorted next week. Terrible attitude. Tell your manager and the HR person responsible for your area.

If your hours have taken you below min wage then they are potentially in breach if they don’t pay promptly

is it a big company?

jcyclops · 11/06/2025 22:13

Firstly, ask for an advance (loan) - to be paid back by deduction from next month's payroll.

Secondly - find out where the system for paying you overtime is breaking down and get the system corrected.

Yeah this.

HMRC have fined companies a lot of money for breaches of NMW law.

I would point this out to HR and insist on them doing a payment run for the money you are owed before the end of the month.

It's two payments they have cocked up now.
