To report what this colleague did?

I have recently started as an apprentice at a nursery. Today a child was wondering into a different room where they wasn’t meant to be. Instead of my colleague picking him up carefully or gently redirecting him, she grabbed and picked him up by one arm and walked with him like that with him off the ground quite a bit by one arm. This made him cry. Other colleagues found it funny but I didn’t.

Have you had your safeguarding training? If so what is the recommendation? If not you should not yet be working with the children.

TheSlantedOwl · 11/06/2025 18:29

That’s not ok, she was rough with the child.

Newname71 · 11/06/2025 18:30

That’s a safeguarding issue and one you should definitely report. Poor child.

Noshadowsinthedark · 11/06/2025 18:31

That’s horrific. Please do report, poor kid.

StrawberryFields2025 · 11/06/2025 18:32

I am posting here as everyone else who witnessed seemed to laugh it off. This made me think if she does this so easily in front of others, what would she do when alone

Two very shocking things here.

  1. A nursery worker doing that to a child.
  2. An apprentice nursery worker needing to ask if they're unreasonable to report it.

Poor kid.

JudithOnHolidayAgain · 11/06/2025 18:34

I'm shocked you even need to ask.
Of course you should report it!
Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility

Asking here for support as I’ve just started my first job here and everyone around that witnessed it just laughed it off.

That poor kid. Yes please report it. Obviously it’s cruel and inappropriate. Also because someone else might report it (even if they were laughing) and you’ll look complicit if you stay silent.

concreteschoolyard · 11/06/2025 18:35

It is ok for an apprentice to ask a question!! Sheesh. Stop blaming the OP, she is trying to do the right thing.

What does that have to do with it?

You either report or you don't.

And if you don't, you're definitely in the wrong job.

SalmonDreams · 11/06/2025 18:40

Uggh the vipers are out again. Why is it so hard for some people to just answer a question without grabbing rhe chance to stick the boot in?

Op of course it's ok to ask and yes, you should report it. More than the grabbing I'd be horrified by the laughing. What kind of people find it funny when a child is upset? It sounds like a horrible place. Thanks for doing the right thing!!

DwarfPalmetto · 11/06/2025 18:40

YANBU OP I don't know why so many posters are having a go at you.

Yes you need to report. Even when you are not sure, you should always report. The DSL will make a decision about what needs to be done.

Newname71 · 11/06/2025 18:47

Please ignore the posters having a go at you for asking the question.
If you haven’t had any safeguarding training that’s not your fault that’s your course providers/placements fault.
Please do report it and I’d see if you can get another placement. It doesn’t sound like you’re going to get decent training there!

Just ignore the idiots on here.

You should always ask if you are not sure.

Oh do shut up.

It is her first job.

Exactly.

So many people on here are idiots.

OneFineDay13 · 11/06/2025 18:59

Yes OP and ignore the twat on this thread it's ok to ask for advice

Bigfatsunandclouds · 11/06/2025 19:00

Bloody hell, some people are so unkind on here - just answer the question, it's her first job and all her colleagues brushed it off.

OP yes I would report it, it's not funny and this can cause elbow dislocation easily - parents trust nurseries to treat their children with love and care and this did not happen.

Shesellsseashellsnotinmystreet · 11/06/2025 19:02

Report and reconsider if you want to work there...

Were you born knowing everything?

My god - the lack of understanding on this thread.

OP is an apprentice. Trained staff who are senior to her ( and are teaching her) are suggesting this is ok. OP is rightly trusting her gut.

OP - ignore the nasty remarks. You should definitely report it.

Bunnybear42 · 11/06/2025 19:06

Yes absolutely Report and it’s obviously great you realise it’s not right. As you say it’s concerning what she might do alone and the colleague that laughed clearly could be doing similar.
Ignore the snarky comments from others on here- you are an apprentice and you will report and do the right thing.

What does your own moral compass tell you to do.

OldMcDonaldHadABigMac · 11/06/2025 19:12

Some right cows here.

You should discuss it with your manager OP.
