To think the nurse is wrong and it’s not a normal urine sample?!

Nurse did a dipstick into a urine sample while at the GP surgery. She said it showed white blood cells so would be sent off for testing.

She said this is probably normal?! Surely white blood cells equal infection?

I had this quite recently, was tested twice but no infection. They said small amounts can be normal.

I’m concerned as due to have an interview on Monday morning but the result won’t come back until Tuesday apparently. I would have liked the antibiotics in case

It is not good to be gung ho with prescribing antibiotics. You shouldn't have them just in case.

Taking antibiotics when you don't actually need them is a pretty bad idea, hence why it's been sent off to check.

Antibiotics should only be taken if needed.

Too many patients expect a gp or nurse to just hand over a prescription when most of the time there not neccessary.

DO YOU HAVE SYMPTOMS OP, IF SO, WHAT ARE THEY????

I'm probably going to blow some peoples minds when i say I took 4g of cefelaxin every day for nearly 10 years for a UTI! 😆

This is mind blowing ! I’m curious - Were you spacing that dosage out over the day?
i took a daily dose of antibiotic for 6 months and thought that was a long term course!

Skippingaround · 12/06/2025 18:52

You obviously don't have symptoms as you are not complaining of any, health professionals don't prescribe antibiotics just for white cells if the patient doesn't have symptoms. Your sample would need to be positive for other markers to convince for infection. It gets sent off just so not to potentially miss anything but the nurse would be right in that it's probably normal..

In order to obtain antibiotics from a pharmacist you would need to lie and say you have symptoms - which would be an awful thing to do and pointless.

You do sound unhinged !

2g in the morning and 2g at night. I was on azithromyacin 3x a day for the first few years as well.

Does it really matter? The op is long gone and who could blame her with some of these responses.

Gggapp · 13/06/2025 09:25

These responses are so ridiculous, of course I had symptoms! Why on earth would I get a urine sample if I didn’t?

I have since called the GP and they provided a prescription.
