I have been caring for my old dad for a few years, and claimed Carers Allowance.
He went into hospital last November and it quickly became obvious that he would be unable to return to independent living.
I cancelled my claim, via the online portal.

I have now cancelled my claim 7 times via the online portal, once on the phone ( was told it was on hold and I would receive 2 letters, one acknowledging cancellation, and one to let me know how much was repayable- I recieved nothing.
I also wrote to them, signed for.
I am STILL being paid.

I an do stressed out. I gave the money sitting, waiting for them to reclaim, but bizarrely, its costing me a bloody fortune to keep visiting and paying parking fees for dad in his new residential care home. The temptation to dip in to this money accruing is huge.
I won't, because I'm a scared cat, but ffs, why are they STILL paying me???
Has this happened to anyone else?

Use it if your struggling. You can do a repayment plan. That said id get your mp involved & get it stopped.

RaininSummer · 11/06/2025 17:17

They are notoriously slow to end claims I am afraid .

Flicitytricity · 11/06/2025 17:50

Am I wrong to keep cancelling it online?
I just feel that I have tracking - I get an email saying I need do nothing further🙄
Ringing and writing to them I have no 'proof'

If anyone has found a way to stop the payments, please shout!

I'll have a look for my MPs contact details, thank you @justkeepswimingswiming

You just have to wait until they stop paying you - took 6 months in my case.

soontobeconfirmed · 11/06/2025 18:05

They stop paying eventually when demand it back all in one lump sum. Been there. Done that. Very frustrating

pullingmyhairout2 · 11/06/2025 18:14

Put it in a high interest account. Might as well get something out of it while you're waiting!

Sonolanona · 11/06/2025 18:46

They are so frustrating to deal with. However they cancelled my claim they day I asked. Now I need to reclaim and boy is it taking forever... they are just inefficient.
I agree with others... pop it in an account that earns interest in the meantime!

Bamboozled72 · 11/06/2025 18:59

I tried to claim Esa earlier this year from a back injury. Had fit note and all details. They were useless. On hold for 2+ hours and then they'd just hang up. It was so frustrating. It got to the point where my 3 month fit note was about to expire and still nothing. In the end I wrote to my Mp and within a week some money miraculously appeared in my account. Today I had to ring them to end my claim as my fit note expured today. Again, 2 hours on hold. I finally spoke to someone who said they'd sort it out for me. I'm dreading receiving any more money from them. They are utterly useless and so bloody stressful to deal with. You have my sympathy. I hope I never have to deal with them again.

Something similar happened to a friend of mine who has since died. She was a social worker and knew that they were paying her too high a rate of Attendance Allowance - she kept telling them and they kept paying her. She finished up having to make repayments and dealing with the implication of fraud - all whilst dying! Bloody awful.

TheSeventh · 11/06/2025 19:22

Even when they do stop it they sometimes randomly start it back up again! I met someone who had their claim reinstated 6 months later so Their universal credit was reduced. Biggest problem was that carers allowance didn't actually pay them anything only said they had so they had no money! Really bad.

MerryGrimaceShake · 11/06/2025 19:46

DWP do this with literally everything. Carers allowance, tax credits.

They overpaid me 6k tax credits despite me constantly updating my circumstances with them as you should and them having open access to records. Universal credit did the same to the tune of 1k, so now I have 7k worth of debt I will never be able to pay back (no, not even a payment plan of £5 a monthI can’t even pay my bills at the moment). And there are tens of thousands of others in all kinds of debt that has been put upon them because the whole DWP cannot do their one job. But also ignore cases of fraud going on years and years by actual scabs.

They should be abolished, totally unfit for purpose.

I got overpaid carers allowance they can sod off if they want it back in a lump. They take it off my UC in instalments now

Flicitytricity · 12/06/2025 20:00

Thanks everyone, my dad actually died today, so DWP can just sod off.

I wish I'd never claimed in the first place now. Its not worth the stress. I dont claim anything else at all, so will have to repay the lump sum.

They are totally unfit for purpose.

Sending condolences... concentrate now on supporting each other and finding ways of celebrating his life. Sod the DWP.

Bamboozled72 · 12/06/2025 22:16

So sorry to hear this. Take care of yourself. Definitely sod the DWP. X
