Pedestrian

So am driving out onto a box junction and am clear to go just as a pedestrian decides to step off pat walk in front of me. I braked. She stands there looking away in opposite direction, oblivious. She started going in her Tesco bag. My partner shouted out the window “get off the road” which seemed to do the trick
she hurled abused back after - but we were surely right? Feel stressed now.

I don't know if there is a special rule for pedestrians who stop in the road to search their bags 🙄, but she did have priority, in theory

"give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross a road into which or from which you are turning. If they have started to cross they have priority, so give way"

The Highway Code - Using the road (159 to 203) - Guidance - GOV.UK

Rules for using the road, including general rules, overtaking, road junctions, roundabouts, pedestrian crossings and reversing.

Pedestrians have priority now.

Pootles34 · 10/06/2025 16:28

Sounds like she had priority, but that doesn't include stopping in the middle of the road, ideally! Your partner could have been a bit more polite ... I want to learn how to do a friendly 'toot' on the horn but always think it would probably come off too aggressive. In conclusion, no one has covered themselves in glory.

ComtesseDeSpair · 10/06/2025 16:28

Whilst pedestrians have right away, stopping in the middle of the road is pretty dozy. I wouldn’t have yelled “get off the road” though, that’s never going to do anything but provoke a similarly aggressive response in return - particularly from somebody who’s just been startled.

Theoretically pedestrians have the right of way and, although her behaviour wasn't exactly sensible, I do think your partner yelling at her to get off the road was dicky. "Excuse me" might have been less so

Well, not theoretically. Actually.

Exactly.

Your partner was a dick because firstly, she had priority and secondly, he wasn’t driving.

UndermyShoeJoe · 10/06/2025 19:43

Pedestrian had priority and your partner acted like a dick.

She doesn’t need permission from the government to be on the road, you in your car do.

flowerpink · 10/06/2025 20:02

I don't think your partner acted like a dick at all, priority or not pedestrians shouldn't take the piss with it
