To Postpone a Trip because of Sciatic Nerve Pain?

Supposed to be flying from US to UK next Monday with my daughter (19). We’ve both been looking foto it, but I am miserable with sciatica and fear the 10-12 hour plane journey.

Would it be unreasonable to postpone our trip to the fall when I ‘should’ be better?

Can you see a physio for advice/ treatment?

ScoliMum · 10/06/2025 03:25

Anybody voting YABU has obviously never experienced bad sciatica! Of course YANBU OP, unless you can afford to upgrade to business class and lie flat the plane journey would be absolutely miserable

I’ve been seeing a physical therapist for about a month now and it’s helping, but I’m still struggling

Postpone. You want to enjoy your time there not be in pain.

I hope you feel better soon. Bob and Brad physiotherapists on YouTube helped me with sciatic and cubital tunnel, perhaps worth a look?

Can you get the injection. Relief is instant if it works for you.

chocolatemademefat · 10/06/2025 15:13

I’d postpone. Sciatic pain is misery - and would be unbearable on a plane. I hope you get some relief soon.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 10/06/2025 15:20

I’d probably postpone… but if you don’t my advice would be to get some of the stick on heating thingy’s for the plane oh and if possible yes to the plane upgrade if you are able to.

Thanks all - I've been busy rearranging my trip! It isn't at all unreasonable to postpone my trip to care for myself, but it's hard for me to not feel like I'm somehow letting someone down or that it's not as bad as I'm making out.

Honestly, should discuss with my therapist but I don't have one right now.

At it's worst I don't even think I could physically sit down on a plane with sciatica so I wouldn't have a choice!

Get a steroid shot and prescription for pregabalin. Currently 7 months out from disc protrusion number eleventy billion, two months ago I couldn't even shuffle to the side of the bed to pee in a bed pan. The pregabalin was the only thing that gets me through the day. Was in London for a few days a few weeks ago and I truly didn't think I could do it but the pregabalin really helped. Going on holiday next Thursday armed with my prescription and know I will be absolutely fine even if I'm just plonked on the sunlounger.

Thanks, I'm going to carry on with the physiotherapy and hope to swerve further medication. I was given a course of Prednisone when I ended up in Urgent Care crying with pain and that helped, but it was only a 5-day course as they don't want you to get addicted!

Go get some acupuncture.. Best thing l did for mine.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 11/06/2025 22:30

Sound awful.
If you can get the pain under control, can you hire a mobility scooter.

Hoooray · 11/06/2025 22:36

You poor thing. Sciatica really is awful, the pain can make you frantic. I would speak to your GP first in case there's anything they can give you for immediate relief when it flares up but if that's not possible I would postpone until you're well.

I've already seen the doctor, and been to Urgent Care, and I'm seeing a physical therapist. I take Aleve Night to help me sleep and it is getting better.

I've postponed the trip and feel better already!

I think you made the right call. That flight with sciatica pain + lots of luggage schlepping and walking. Do it when you can enjoy it.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 12/06/2025 08:04

Good for you. I hope you have a speedy recovery.
