New Covid Variant

I’ve only ever had flu once in my adult life. It was that bad I remember it was in 2016. Since then the odd cold but never caught covid, as far as I know. Had my vaccinations.

Woke up last Thursday to feeling dreadful and by the end of the day. My throat is in pieces, I’m coughing yellow/green (sorry for the description) thick balls of it up, the congestion and pain in my head reduced me to tears and the waves of feeling sick it’s like I’m at sea.

My dad is also really sick with the same symptoms and he’s mid 70’s so worried and it sounds like my brother thought he had Covid, but was over the ‘worst’ and decided not to tell us that and we all met for Sunday lunch last week.

Does this sound like the new Covid? My legs are like jelly and I truly haven’t felt like this in a decade.

In the old days we would have called that glandular fever.

Or mono, in America.

No thankfully it’s not glandular fever. I had that and still get flare ups now as a result. That’s very different to a cold/flu

I guess it doesn’t really matter if it is Covid. It’s definitely much more than a cold. It’s really nasty and has completely floored me.

I would have stayed away from people but at the weekend before it really hit me, I have to food shop and get medication so I was mixing with people. Also I messaged the plumber I thought I had covid so upto him if he came. He came and then moaned at me about he didn’t realise I was as ill as I am - well I did say! He said you look and sound terrible.

I am someone who never gets a cough and it feels like someone is blowing dandelions into my lungs laced with arsenic. I’m coughing really violently - feel so ill that it makes me even a conspiracy theorist that this horrific disease must be man made.

It sounds like pneumonia and a chest infection. You need antibiotics. Take large doses of vitamins C, D3 and zinc. Drink a lot of water / herb tea. Gargle saltwater. If you can, rinse your sinuses with warm saltwater. Bed rest. You’ll be better next week.

you should never ‘rinse’ your sinuses with ‘saltwater’

In the old days? Glandular fever is a specif illness

Suspect husband and I have had it this past week. His throat has felt like razor blades and I’ve felt weak as a kitten with hot sweats all day and night. Both vaccinated though so not particularly concerned and both on the up now.

caringcarer · 12/06/2025 03:08

I'm similar. Tonight I coughed so much I coughed myself sick. I'm struggling to breathe properly as I'm asthmatic and I've been puffing on inhalers. I can't lie flat in bed so propped up with 4 pillows and trying to sleep upright. My throat feels raw. My nose is constantly running and every so often my temperature is up. I'm taking hot lemon drinks so then temperature goes back down. It's floored me. I have 0 energy and keep getting nasty headaches. So far I've had it 8 or 9 days. I just know it's COVID as I had it once before. If your snot is green you've got an infection and need antibiotics. Mines viral so just staying in and resting.

Dwappy · 12/06/2025 06:25

If your snot is green you've got an infection and need antibiotics

It doesn’t mean this at all. Viruses can cause green snot as well. The green colour is when your body is fighting an infection. This could be a bacterial or viral infection. And even if it is bacterial, not every infection needs antibiotics. Most cold symptoms will get better on their own. I’ve had green snot on many many occasions in my life and never had antibiotics. The human body can fight things off alone. Antibiotics are helpful if your body is struggling, but overuse isn’t a good idea in the long run.

Stardust75 · 13/06/2025 14:56

I've had the same for a week. Exactly the same symptoms. Tested covid negative!

gamerchick · 13/06/2025 15:04

It dropped 2 of my mates on their arses, one had to do hospital for a couple of days, the other had to go to bed for 3 and we nearly called someone for help. Scared the crap out of everyone.

But if course it doesn't exist and we need to treat it like a cold according to some Facebook friends. The whole scamdemic thing.

In the old days, we’d have called that ‘drowned at sea’.

I tested positive for COVID five weeks ago..Symptoms: Day of mild cold symptoms followed by a night of being chilled to the bone one minute then feverish. The next day had awful nausea and vomiting, couldn't get out of bed and although the nausea eased after a day, couldn't face food for a couple of days. Wiped out for a couple of weeks afterwards and had to cancel certain events till I tested negative after 10 days. I'm retired and healthy but I do attend groups with more vulnerable people so I do take care not to socialise if I've got any nasty bugs, not just COVID. To be honest, I thought it was a gastric flu, no sore throat at all. Only tested because a friend commented her friend had similar symptoms and it was COVID. I've had COVID several times over the last five years but I am wary of the exhaustion it can leave you with long after the initial symptoms have cleared up. My first dose was very mild but the exhaustion I was left with was unlike anything I'd ever experienced and lasted well over a month.

AFrolicOfMyOwn · 13/06/2025 17:16

Joining the register of the sick …

Raw throat, runny nose, coughing, legs buckling, total exhaustion. Not yet as bad as the last time - and hoping I’m not left with months of physical and mental devastation as I was before.

For the moment I’m just thanking all that’s holy that I decided against getting tickets for an extravagant wine tasting event tomorrow evening. Had booked an outdoor concert instead - will have to wait and see if I’m miraculously cured overnight.

Sympathies to all sufferers. It’s a miserable way to spend such a beautiful day.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 13/06/2025 18:54

I feel shocking. Did a Covid test and it’s positive.

Spartan123 · 17/06/2025 18:39

I don’t know what it is, but it’s horrific. My head feels like it’s spilting apart, jaw pain, throat sore, so tired.
