Can surgery be re-arranged because DP is unwell?

I’m due to have septoplasty tomorrow and my DH was supposed to be taking care of our one year old while I recover. I believe he may have Covid or something similar as he’s been poorly all day.

If I go ahead with the surgery I won’t have anyone that can look after my DD as we’ll both then be recovering.

Can I ask them to re-arrange the surgery or will they discharge me back to my GP?

Thanks

They'll discharge you. Tell your OH to man up and take some paracetamol.

The taking care of a one year old wouldn’t bother me. But wouldn’t want to be risking flu or Covid with a septoplasty. Sneezing and coughing would be agony surely?

I manage a surgical booking office and we wouldn’t discharge you for this unless you’d previously cancelled or just don’t turn up

@MatildaMovesMountains he’s been taking paracetamol all day today but it’s not really doing much. Usually I’d agree with you but a few months ago I had something similar to him (except I was vomiting too) and it floored me. I ended up in A&E and they were suspecting Sepsis due to my symptoms. It was awful.

@Phonicshaskilledmeoff I was thinking this. I initially it was DD who was unwell and I think she may have passed it on to DH so it’s a matter of time before I probably get it too 🥲

@polkadotpixie thank you for the response. What would it be like in terms of them offering another appointment? Would I have to wait weeks or months? Obviously it depends on the waiting lists but typically what would you say it’s like for a cancellation?

There are a lot of variables…surgeon availability, theatre availability, anaesthetic availability, theatre team availability, bed availability, other more urgent patients coming through etc so it’s almost impossible to tell you without knowing your trust/department’s waiting lists but an awful lot goes into a theatre list actually happening, more than people realise

Phone the ward and ask for advice...re possible covid in the house.
I am sure he'd manage to look after child if ward happy to have you etc. As single parents manage to look after a child or parent when poorly..you just have to.

It’s likely if you call and say you have potential Covid in your household that they won’t want you to attend anyway.

I spoke to the bookings office and they agreed to rearrange it. She said she’d be in touch with another date.

Ironically I feel extremely tired and I’ve started to get a runny nose today (separate from my ENT issues) so I’m not sure if I’m coming down with something too. I guess delaying it was for the best in this case
