If you were gifted £30k, what would you do with it?

I think I’d put £15k aside for home improvements, would overpay around £6k on our mortgage, deposit £1k/£2k into my pension and would use the rest for a holiday and a few treats.

What about you?

That must be a luxury kitchen! We’ve just had a new kitchen with remodel and a wall removed for £25k all in.

We did a lot - new windows, quartz worktops, and new cabinets. We had the old tile floor ripped out and leveled, and replaced with LVP. New dimmable LED lighting in the ceiling and under the cabinets. To meet the electrical code, every appliance had to be put on its own circuit, so we had all of that done too. Then we had the walls patched and repainted. Here are some pictures from when we were 90% done. It's quite a large kitchen.

I'd get a dish washer and some new flooring for my living room and a lovely Chinese takeaway!

Moonnstars · 09/06/2025 20:57

New kitchen and a holiday

Srubag · 09/06/2025 20:57

£30k straight off the mortgage. Never had it, wouldn’t miss it

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 09/06/2025 20:59

Work on the house. There’s enough that needs doing to eat up £30k easily.

GreenLeavesInSummer · 09/06/2025 20:59

Pay off debts 12k
Savings 2k
Rest- probably pay off some mortgage
Maybe an amazing holiday

Redcliffe1 · 09/06/2025 21:00

I got similar this and used nearly all of it on my mortgage to bring my repayments down plus one holiday with the kids overseas.

marshmallowpuff · 09/06/2025 21:01

House repairs and renovations - we need a new kitchen, and I’d like to redo some of the flooring and repaint throughout. Not more than £15-20k I estimate. Then, probably, a really nice holiday!

Echobelly · 09/06/2025 21:02

I'd spend most of it on a new kitchen to last us the rest of our time in this house (hopefully 15+ years); we bought an Ikea kitchen when we redecorated 8 years ago and though I loved the ikea kitchen in our last place, this one hasn't aged well and looks really tatty.

Not expecting any more family money (please God) anytime soon, but I am in a new field of work where we should get decent bonuses; I don't imagine 5-fgures at my level, but maybe enough that 3 or 4 big wins might get us a new kitchen!

SquashedSquid · 09/06/2025 21:02

I'd get the wheelchair and hospital bed I desperately need.

Sunshine1500 · 09/06/2025 21:03

£20k house improvements
£7k holiday
£3k cosmetic treatments/products

JuvenileBigfoot · 09/06/2025 21:04

I recently was gifted 40k. Paid off my credit card, repaid a loan early, bought a 1k tablet, upgraded to business class on a flight to an already planned holiday. Rest in savings (approx 15k)

ThatCoolDenimSquid · 09/06/2025 21:05

harsh 😂

yogpot · 09/06/2025 21:07

Was recently gifted 50k. Bought a new MacBook, put the rest in our savings (DH is a contractor and I’m going back to uni so income is less secure than we’d like right now).

When our jobs are on more secure footing we will be renovating our kitchen and utility.

Is this the before or after?

15 mortgage
10 home
5 holiday

I think the point is that her kitchen will be bigger and finished to a higher standard than yours. She's considerably richer than you, basically.

Silly me and my proletarian kitchen.

DryDay · 09/06/2025 21:10

I’d just invest it for retirement. Sounds boring but we’re only a few years away from retirement now and I want peace of mind more than anything else now.

Those pictures are from when the new kitchen was 90% complete. The old kitchen was 40 years old and pretty dire.

I don’t usually like grey, but that is a beautiful kitchen. You must be so pleased with it.

I particularly like how the cupboards go right to the top. I’ll be thinking of this kitchen as I dust the top of my cupboards!

I’m getting a decent redundancy later this year. While my house would definitely benefit from some improvements I think I’m going to use most of it for a series of holidays over the next few years - nothing fancy but hiking in Morocco, sea kayaking Greek islands kind of things.

im probably going to have to work full time to retirement age or beyond and I’ve seen my parents health fail to the extent that they can’t go away - so I want to do some trips while I can …

We’re having similar - levelled floor, tiling, plastering, electrics, knock through two walls, new patio doors and window (timber), new units, new appliances: fridge/freezer, washing machine, dishwasher and range cooker. £25k. Our kitchen is a bit bigger than yours, but new have no upper units.

TragicMuse · 09/06/2025 21:21

Pay the last of the mortgage, have some work done (small bit of roof, painting the exterior), look at whether I could afford a small campervan!

Deebee90 · 09/06/2025 21:24

I’d put £20k on my mortgage, 5k on a nice holiday and then 5k on home improvements

Thanks, we are very pleased with it. The worst part was losing the use of it for seven or eight weeks while the work was done. I got really sick of takeaways or going out to eat almost every night.

We had a woman builder do it and she was aces to work with.
