Dental Implants

Hi, posting here for traffic! I have a missing upper molar tooth, I am thinking about getting a dental implant, but the thought of it leaves me petrified! Has anyone had one done, and how was/is it?

I had a front tooth implant, and it’s been fantastic. The process was expensive but I never had any pain at any stage. I would definitely recommend it.

Same experience as @TheFlis

I had a front tooth implant nearly five years ago. It cost almost £3K then, so obviously expensive, but for a front tooth I thought it was worth it.

I was horribly nervous beforehand but, really and truly, I never had any pain at any stage. I had been warned that I might experience some pain and swelling once the local anaesthetic wore off but I had nothing like that at all.

I am very pleased with it and am very glad I had it done.

My DH has just had one. It was a long process with multiple appointments over about 8 months. He needed bone grafting which I think makes it more complicated and not everyone needs that. I wouldn't say he enjoyed it, but nor was it hideously painful. He is not a stoic and I am sure I would have known if he was in significant pain! He needed to take simple painkillers for a day or two after some of the stages but that's all, the most painful part has been paying for it! I think it was about £3.5k for one tooth but we can't fault the care and now it's finished it does look very good.

I've just had one. It's wasn't as bad as having wisdom teeth out, but I would prefer to go for smear test. 😂. Dentist said I was brave for driving home. The injections were the most painful part and there was some quite intense drilling and tapping that vibrated in my skull.
Able to manage after with pain killers fine, although felt rough and very swollen for 2 or 3 days after. Sleeping was hard cause I normally sleep on the side I had the surgery. But pretty much back to normal after a week.
Will take me along time to pay off my credit card though!

I am in the middle of having 3 done. Implants went in 3 weeks ago and I am back at start of sept to have the crowns put on.
Cost £2,200 per tooth +scan and assessment appointment.
Dentist recommended ibuprofen for a couple of days to keep swelling minimal but I didn't feel any pain after a couple of hours anyway.
Stitches in gum were mildly annoying but have come out now.
On my experience so far I wish I hadn't put it off for a year (and would encourage anyone thinking about it to at least have an assessment appointment).

I have three implants which support a bridge of 5 replacement front teeth. (Lost in a car accident in my early teens.)

It has been absolutely transformative for my confidence and medically it's so much better for my bone health and general dental health as my other teeth are better supported.

I had it done at 29 (had to wait to stop growing and then save up) and I'm 51 now. Absolutely no regrets, best money spent!

I had to have quite a brutal process as the teeth had been missing a long time and the bone had receded so the implants had to be put in quite deep to promote the bone redeveloping. It was not pleasant I must say but it did not hurt . I had local anaesthetic- i could have had general but it was another 1k! I had penicillin for 10 days and some painkillers at first but I would say I felt bruised/ tender rather than in pain and had to eat soft food for a few days. I'm quite a wimp so it really wasn't awful.

Go for it! Particularly if the loss of your tooth was recent, don't delay - the less the bone recedes, the easier the process.

It’s a journey as they say, takes ages, very expensive but to me it was worth it. Very unpleasant procedure but felt fine after, tender and swollen for a day or two.

honeyrider · 09/06/2025 12:24

I have a few implants and I'm delighted with them. I didn't experience any pain during or after treatment. I had bone grafts too but that's just putting in granular bone that takes a few months to support your own bone to grow over it.

Ash099 · 09/06/2025 16:14

How long has your tooth been missing for? The bone starts to recede after so many years months and adding on a bone graft will push up the cost. I have a missing tooth but a back molar and am intending to go for an implant but I am a total wimp , not sure I can hack it

Doone22 · 10/06/2025 07:12

Look at reviews for local places. Mine not cheap but staff, process and so on all totally brilliant. Had sedation for mine. Don't remember a thing!

I wasn't going to read this thread and now wish I hadn't! I'm having 6-monthly bone infusions as part of cancer treatment and can't have any serious dental work until the 3-yr course is finished (in September, yippee!). I've lost 2 crowns during the treatment and already have 3 missing teeth so was advised to go for implants. None of them are front teeth, couple of canines though, so not obvious but running out of chewing teeth that meet! Having read this thread, think I'll go for a plate tbh - I'm in my 70s and don't think I'm brave enough for implants. I salute all of you who've gone for it 👏 👏 👏

honeyrider · 10/06/2025 08:54

Mine didn't hurt at all, a filling was more painful.

user1471538283 · 19/01/2026 17:39

I'm sorry to come on this thread so late but I think in 6 months to a year I'll need a bone graft and an implant. I've been so upset. I've got rubbish teeth and because this is one of the front ones it's devastating.

This has given me hope that all will be well.

umberellaonesie · 19/01/2026 17:44

I had one last year. It was straightforward and painless. I would rather have an implant than a root canal

Don't worry about a bone graft, it's usually granular to fill in where you've lost bone and your own bone forms round it.
