What age for child to have a shower by themselves

My Dc is almost 7, recently they’ve been doing a quick shower themselves and enjoying the independence, is this too young?
What age would you let yours?

I was 7.
DD is 8- still needs/wants someone there. But I’m escalating her cleaning knowledge quickly as conscious she needs to shower and dry by herself.

Littletreefrog · 08/06/2025 20:10

Perfectly fine at 7, I would make sure the door was ajar and I was nearby but other than that I would let them get on with it at that age

SilviaSnuffleBum · 08/06/2025 20:10

My twins have been having showers on their own since they were 5-ish?
The bathroom door is open and we live in a small flat, so I am always within earshot.
7 is more than old enough!

CatRescueNeeded · 08/06/2025 20:11

About 5 here

SupposesRoses · 08/06/2025 20:15

Mine were fine at 5, but depends whether they can turn the water up to an unsafe temperature or not

Girasoli · 08/06/2025 20:16

I think that's fine with the door open.

I still need to turn the shower on and off for DS1 (9) but that's because he can't reach. Other than that I just tell him to make sure he uses soap and doesn't just stand there daydreaming.

donttellmewhaticantdo · 08/06/2025 20:16

My son is 5 and has a shower on his own but I turn the water on for him, and will pop in and out to check how he is getting on.

OverpricedCupcake · 08/06/2025 20:17

Yeah, around 7.

Rollonautumnplease · 08/06/2025 20:18

Do you still give them baths where you sit with them and wash their hair and they play? Sure u was still having my my mum wash my hair until much older than 7, also a bit sad it could be the end of that

Totally child dependent. I still help my 12 year old to shower, he's dyspraxic and ND and struggles to remember all the steps and how to execute them all properly. If I didn't help him his hair would be half clean, he wouldn't wash his face and would take 5x as long. I'll help him as long as he needs and wants me to.

My 5yo is learning but needs help and supervision for now, he'll be doing it all independently before his older brother i suspect, but his gross motor skills are better, as well as his ability to remember steps and make it habitual.

Dramatic · 08/06/2025 20:20

Are 5 year olds washing their hair by themselves? I don't feel like my 5 year old is anywhere close to being able to do it properly without any help, she does have long hair though.

NatalieH2220 · 08/06/2025 20:21

My 7yo showered independently for a while. I think it's a good age. He's now 8 and scared of showers again so back to baths here.

Mine are 8 and 10 and still need help washing their hair. I think it's different with each child.

Notthisnotthat · 08/06/2025 20:23

I still need to help my 10 year old with her hair just to make sure it’s all rinsed out, but she does everything else herself and I’m always floating about nearby and the door is never locked.

Shesellsseashellsnotinmystreet · 08/06/2025 20:26

Ds is 10 and just been managing himself this year... Liked a bath before then.. And we used to have a catch up etc while I pottered on the bathroom..

Namechange13101 · 08/06/2025 20:28

My 6DD showers on her own with the bathroom door open, but I always check that she’s rinsed her hair properly.

KnickerlessFlannel · 08/06/2025 20:28

Body wash shower - 5 year old can manage fine if someone puts it on for her and turns it off, plus soap etc left within reach (she's a shortie)

Hair wash - dd1 was about 9 when she could do this is independently but has bum length hair

sundaysunday2024 · 08/06/2025 20:59

6 year old usually has a bath rather than shower. I wash his hair for him, occasionally he does it himself, but otherwise I do the ironing in the hallway whilst watching him in the bath- kills two birds with one stone 😊

9 year old still needs supervising in the shower and prompting to wash hair and body properly. Has ADHD though so has difficulty sequencing instructions - it's a work in progress!

garlictwist · 08/06/2025 21:05

My dd has been showering and washing her hair alone from about 5.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 08/06/2025 21:09

I think about 7. They have very thick hair and really need to shampoo properly so loosely supervised that bit for about a year.

Mynewnameis · 08/06/2025 21:12

My daughter has long thick hair and needs help to wash it properly. Shes 8.
A simple shower she's fine with, but occasionally gets soap in eyes or needs help.

TakeMe2Insanity · 08/06/2025 21:12

I think boys are easier in the shower as hair less effort. Yes to 5. A bath at 5 I use to sit in the bathroom just because baths feel a little more dangerous (watch me hold my breath underwater).

5 would be pretty unusual
