Husband moaning about dinners

Willow990 · 08/06/2025 16:55

I meal prep every Sunday for dinners for the week ahead, a typical week looks something like this:

Mon - chilli or spaghetti bolognese
Tuesday - curry (chicken)
Wednesday - fish (salmon usually)
Thursday - stir fry
Friday - Steak

I told DH this morning what I was planning for next week and he asked whether there’s any chance of some variety and for me to try some new dishes. He works long days and I’m usually about to serve up as he walks through the door.

Has anyone got any ideas for how I could freshen things up?

My DC are currently really into bowl food

salmon/prawn poke bowls:
rice base
salmon fillet
edamame
cucumber
radish
grated carrot
avocado
wakame
sesame seed

Greek bowls
Rice base (yes I know this isn’t actually very Greek)
Lemon and pepper marinated chicken thighs
tzatsiki
fried aubergine
Red onion

feta

olives
Toasted chickpeas

morrocan bowls

cous cous
shredded lamb
red pepper
Re onion

pomegranate
feta
Corriander

super easy to do rice: /couscous goes in rice cooker meat/fish in over and then everyone adds what they want. A lot of it you can buy prep packaged to save time: pomegranate seeds, red peppers in olive oil, tzatsiki or you can make your own

It wouldn't bother me. However I work PT and enjoy cooking. I usually mix it up anyway but sometimes DH will mention that we haven't had x, y or z for a while and I'll add them back in for the next weeks meal plan. If you are meal prepping on a weekend I'd be tempted to batch an additional meal of four individual portions every week. Then two or three nights a week he can pull one of these meals out and sort himself out. It would take the pressure off you and allow you to just sort you and the kids. Easy enough on those nights to just do a jacket spud with toppings put out to choose from for example.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/06/2025 18:34

You did exactly that (“Im willing to bet he isn’t”).

Why the bloody hell should OP divulge her personal financial arrangements to you?

’willing to bet’ is acknowledging the stats - women are mainly left to pick up the unpaid shit work and it frequently disabusing them of their future earning potential and security.

Nothing likd an assumption - whoch would be deciding something is a fact without availing oneself of the details. I’m just betting in favour of the odds. But would be DELIGHTED to be wrong and lose my money - it could make a welcome change.

And please feel free to show me where I demanded further details?

I didn’t.

I just said what I’d be willing to bet on.

Do get a grip of the English language.

DH does all of our cooking and when he plans for the week he asks if there’s anything anyone wants on a particular day, if not his (light hearted) rule is we (me, DS and DD) can’t complain about what we have that week.

FannyBawz · 08/06/2025 18:49

This is what we do:

meat and something
something mincy
something fish based
something with pasta
baked pots n salad
fajitas
chicken cassoulet
roast chicken
curry of some description mainly depending what’s in the fridge
lamb tagine
bean chilli
stir fry

BUT he cooks something fab every Sunday - I love it - I get so bored with my own cooking but am a SAHM so this is what I’m signed up for. Five day rotation would drive us all mad.

so make him do one a week.

Thanks all for the suggestions, plenty of food for thought (pun intended!)

DH is into his fitness so I need to keep things fairly healthy and cooked from scratch as much as possible.

Maybe he could batch cook? He can prepare the meals at the weekends and then he can shove them in the microwave. The batch cooked meals can be cooked from scratch.

Whatthewhatthewhatyhe · 08/06/2025 18:50

This annoys me about my DH sometimes too ! Not that he ever complains, he doesn’t , but he won’t contribute any ideas! I’m always left to decide what we are having so we end up with the same things !

I don’t think the person who doesn’t do the shopping / meal planning understands how hard it actually is to think of ideas !

NoMoreCoffeePlease · 08/06/2025 18:51

I actually sympathise with your husband and don't think what he asks for is cheeky.

If you can afford it, I'd subscribe to Green Chef, Mindful Chef, or a similar type of dinner box for a while. The first ones tend to be cheap and can be of general inspiration.

I don't often have the headspace to try new things either, but I find that a traybake is easy, and the herbs and spices you use will add variety. I also like to use cheese (feta + greek herbs, or blue cheese/brie + parsley for a french twist, cheddar + curry spices...etc).

Vary your carbs - not just pasta or noodles, but naan bread, new potatoes, sweet potato chips, root veg mash, etc.

Try some simple accompanying salads - not just lettuce + tomato + cucumber, but add mint, fruits, nuts, potato, olives, dried tomato, etc.

If you normally have fried chicken - try grilled or slow cooked (and pulled) chicken instead. If you normally have baked salmon, try cod + bacon, or tuna fajitas.

I hope this is helpful and good luck! Let us know what you're going to make!

Sally2791 · 08/06/2025 18:52

Make him cook at least once a week, then he might appreciate more when you do it! Esp if he doesn’t like it. We can’t all cop out of what we don’t like doing.

Vivienne1000 · 08/06/2025 18:54

Go to Cooks, get a load of meals, empty into your own dish and start giving yourself a break. Your husband could also do some meal prep at the weekend!

Socksey · 08/06/2025 18:55

TheAutumnCrow · 08/06/2025 17:01

What about beans on toast?

You do know that they just send the ingredients for you to chop and cook etc... you may as well order from Tesco for half the price

bert3400 · 08/06/2025 18:56

Tik tok & insta are brilliant for new recipes. It's really easy to get into a rut with meals . Get everyone to find a recipe to cook, obviously ahead of time

cardibach · 08/06/2025 18:56

Use the Mealime app. A variety of recipes which you can personalise to taste or dietary restrictions and it writes your shopping list too. I don’t work for them, honest. It’s just made my life easier.

Beautifulweeds · 08/06/2025 18:56

I would try to change the meals to incorporate different ones rather than the same every week. So many options, especially oven dishes, maybe just try a new one once a week.

I'm happy to have whatever but my DH likes his variety so we will plan for different dishes. Xx

LT1233 · 08/06/2025 18:59

I'm a decent cook (helps being a 'housewife' for want of a better job title) and my husband moans he never sees the same meal again - the reason being my targeted/algorithm is so fine tuned to recipes now, that every time I look at my phone, another new recipe is beamed into my retinas. I don't particularly follow recipes to the letter, but I do use them for the constant inspiration of what to cook. The food section on The Guardian (shows new articles up in my Google news feed daily) & Nigella's daily emails has pretty much meant I've not looked at a recipe book for about 5 years. Sometimes I fancy something specific and use the BBC food website or Jamie Oliver. Defo recommend The Guardian though, most the things I cook now are off there.

Endofyear · 08/06/2025 19:03

If he wants more variety, perhaps he should come up with an alternative weekly menu? As the person in our family who does the majority of the cooking, the hardest thing is to come up with ideas for meals every single day that everyone will eat. Even if he's not home in time to cook, he can contribute to the planning!

Teanandtoast · 08/06/2025 19:05

Gousto has been amazing for us!

SouthLondonMum22 · 08/06/2025 19:08

He needs to come up with some ideas. Why is it always all on you? Especially if he's fussy and will say no to most of your ideas anyway.

OhHellolittleone · 08/06/2025 19:08

Could you do a month of Gousto and then add in a few of your family’s favourites to the weekly rotation?

For example, I did a Gousto pork goulash a few weeks ago and I’ve added it in to my
repertoire.

I often so curries but I use ‘the spicery’ (google) spice packs that come with a recipe card and a few packets of ground spices to try out so many different curries (last night was dansak, last week was butter chicken) I’m pretty fussy with Indian and they are really worth getting!

saraclara · 08/06/2025 19:12

Profpudding · 08/06/2025 17:29

I guess that answers what he’s doing while you’re in the kitchen prepping

OP has already said that he doesn't get home from work until late.

Embarrassinglyuseless · 08/06/2025 19:12

I’m a SAHP who does all the evening meals A we work on a three week rotating menu rather than a one week one. No more effort once the initial draft is done - and keeps things feeling a bit fresher

You could have a Bernard Matthews Turkey Dinosaur day 👍🏼

Scentedjasmin · 08/06/2025 19:13

Angel Delight!!

Alternatively just serve the same food but on different days!

I agree that it's up to him to come up with some new suggestions, but fajitas/tacos are always a good option. Noodles are also another quick dish. Risotto freezes well if you are prepping ahead.

StrongGirlsClub · 08/06/2025 19:14

Meal planning is the bane of my life, but having grown up eating the same six or seven dishes on rotation I try very hard to mix things up.

The first thing I’d suggest is writing down a list of all the meals that you enjoy as a family. You will probably be suprised at how many you come up with. We did this and straight away it gave us a good basis and took some of the mental block away. If I’m struggling I go back to the list and am reminded of things we’ve not had for a while!

I’d recommend the bored of recipe books. They do air fryer and slow cooker ones and I found them to be very easy to follow and minimal prep needed. Also a lot of the major supermarkets have good recipe sections and if you shop online you can often add ingredients straight to basket.

in terms of ideas, we tend to stick with similar base ideas and then alter to make different.

Pasta- roast vegetable pasta bake, pasta bolganase, chilli and pasta, tortellini, large pasta shells filled and baked in oven, chorizo pasta bake, tuna pasta bake, veg or meat lasagne.

Stew- chorizo and beef stew, chicken and leak stew, goulash. Serve with mash and or crusty rolls. Often cooked in slow cooker.

Chicken- peri peri chicken, chicken skewers, lemon chicken bake, chicken gyros, stricken hoi sin chicken, tomatoes and mozarella chicken bake. Typically served with rice or fries and salad.

Chicken or veg jambalaya.

Hard or soft Tacos with chicken and salsa, chilli or baked.

Chicken curry- variations. Often made in slow cooker and using store bought paste.

Roast- beef or chicken with seasonal veg. Also something traditional like mince and dumplings or hot pot or pie and veg. Cortage or shepherd pie.

To make things easy I use store bought paste, easy garlic/ chilli and bags of ready to roast veg. Also, sometimes you can use a base for a couple of meals. Like a roast chicken and using left over for stir dry next day or lasagne with extra Bolognese for later in week.

Hope the above helps!

Scentedjasmin · 08/06/2025 19:15

Jamie Oliver's 15 minute meals contains some good inspirational ideas. He's a lying bastard though. All his meals take 30 mins to prepare.
