To ask if you still send cards?

Firstly let me say I am totally not bothered about birthday/Xmas cards, but I do like a Mothers day card and I very much appreciated the sympathy cards when experiencing the loss of a parent.
So earlier this week it was my birthday. Had a lovely day, lots of nice presents, but only 1 card. Lots of people said happy birthday in person and lots of SM posts which was nice. I can easily see how the cost of stamps and the thought of all those cards ending up in landfill puts people off sending them. So do you still send them or is it dieing out and card shops, Hallmark and so on will eventually disappear?

I’m a Luddite who still writes letters sometimes, but I only send cards to my close family & friends.

I send Christmas cards. I would send a sympathy card. But other than my own children I don’t do birthday or any other day (my parents are long dead) unless I’m seeing that person and giving a gift.
Must admit I was a bit disappointed neither of my kids gave me a birthday card (my DD made me a roast dinner and a cake, my son did several hours work in my garden, so they acknowledged it that way, my DD is at uni my son on minimum wage so wasn’t expecting any gifts).

For birthdays I tend to just send my friends a WhatsApp message, but I send cards for other occasions like new babies and new houses and graduations.

We've received a couple of "happy new house" cards in the post which has been lovely.

Yes, I do. Always. As do my friends. But we are old 😂

It was my friend’s birthday while I was away on holiday so I sent her a postcard ( my first for years) Amazingly it arrived on time and it really made her laugh 😆

Haven’t done Christmas cards for years. Used to do father’s/Mother’s Day cards - both parents dead now.

I do buy birthday cards.

familyissues12345 · 15/06/2025 08:52

I rarely send birthday cards, but do give if I’m seeing the person. Can’t remember the last time I sent a Christmas card!

Aside to this, I love buying new baby/wedding/graduation etc cards, especially nice ones on Etsy

Yes I send loads of cards and very much appreciate getting them.

I am almost certainly in your parents' generation so I buy and send cards for relevant occasions - l posted one this very afternoon for a friend's birthday next week. I think a row of birthday cards on the mantelpiece looks very cheerful. My family and friends also send and receive cards.

Ditto. I love opening my birthday cards. I still have the last birthday card my Mum bought me before she died. I keep it and put it up with my other cards every year because she never forget my birthday once.

I still send and receive lots of cards for birthday and Christmas . Last Christmas I decided to do away with cards letting everyone know in advance I’d be doing the charity donation but it wasn’t well received . There’s still lots of people loving cards and so cards it is .

I send loads of cards. And people seem to really appreciate them. And the people talking about the environment do you not travel by plane?

Sprogonthetyne · 15/06/2025 09:56

I give cards but don't tend to send them. If the person is close enough for my to bother with a card, I'd also getting them a gift and visiting to deliver it and spend time with them (even if it was a week or two before or after). Luckily all the people I'm likely to buy for live within a 2h drive.

luckylavender · 15/06/2025 09:58

I still send cards and love to receive them

Surely those are the people who should be trying the hardest to make environmentally conscious decisions elsewhere?

DW thinks sending cards for anything is a waste of time and money and prefers to use various forms of social media instead, I still send them to my siblings and close relatives, just think it’s more personal and shows a bit of effort

marshmallowpuff · 15/06/2025 10:10

Love a card - I like getting them and always send them too (though the cost of stamps is getting a bit offputting, I admit).

I think especially for children the traditional opening of birthday cards is really nice. And everyone loves receiving a card or a postcard out of the blue, don’t they?

I also still send Christmas cards, though I’ve cut them down a lot in recent years (used to send about 80; now send about 40).

RepairCafeMensShed · 15/06/2025 10:11

I hand make some cards that I give or post

One part of the family, we have a competition at Christmas to send the most beautiful, 3D, pop up card. We normally find these while visiting various craft fares & markets.

I also have some friends & relatives that live abroad., so we try to find beautiful cards with local scenes.

Growlybear83 · 15/06/2025 10:13

I always send birthday and Christmas cards, as well as sympathy cards. We’ve not been away for a while now but still sent postcards to my mum when we last went away. My sister in law always sends postcards when she’s travelling and it’s lovely to receive them.
