Are there any dentists here?

My son, 7 lost his front baby tooth around a year ago and when the next one began to come through, it was twisted on its side. He was referred to the dental hospital (which took 6 months) who confirmed via an xray he had two extra baby teeth at the front and the “twisted” tooth was a new baby tooth.

there was talk of extraction but they didn’t want to do this whilst the adult roots were still forming and also because the tooth second extra baby tooth hadn’t erupted.

the plan was to bring him back in January and reassess. Today I’ve noticed the adult tooth is erupting alongside the extra baby tooth - it’s poking through the bottom of the gum but it’s also visible at the front of the gum. I’m worried it will split the front of his gum or do more damage.

do we still wait til January?! Do I book him at the dentist? Ring the dental hospital?!

Hello I'm a dentist. So your child has some extra baby teeth that are awaiting extraction and now his adult tooth has poked through too. I personally wouldn't worry too much about this. He is the correct age for the adult tooth to come through. They were probably going to remove the extra baby teeth incase they impeded the adult teeth coming through and clearly that hasn't happened. Book him in for a check up with your usual dentist and they can have a look for peace of mind. But please don't worry it won't damage his gums

Thank you - yes that’s correct. I think my worry is around damage to his gums, as you mentioned and also I thought they would have wanted / needed to get the “extra” baby teeth out before his new / adult teeth came through which is why I was worried that this new one is visible.

I will call our family dentist on Monday and see if they can see him as he isn’t back at the dental hospital for his follow up and extraction review for another 7 months

Not a dentist but have experience that may be similar.

My daughter had an extra tooth in the middle of her top jaw, at the front. It was a deformed quite large thing (we could only see the tip) and it was preventing the adult teeth (two front ones) coming down. She had it extracted under gas sedation when she was 6 yrs 8 months. Literally within days of it being removed the adult front teeth came down loads. All went very smoothly indeed.

one of the adult teeth is a bit rotated so she may need braces in a couple more years.

Sounds a lot like what is going on here, except it’s two extra central/front teeth but they are both extra baby teeth. Only one is erupted (and very much on its side!!!). They didn’t extract as they were worried about damaging his permanent teeth roots and because the second was still up in his gum (as his left original baby tooth hasn’t fallen out yet).

im dreading the extraction - was the sedation as awful as it sounds in my head?

I have just remembered that my daughter had one wobbly baby tooth in the same area and they pulled that out too during the extraction of the extra tooth.

I was so worried about the sedation but it was FINE. I was allowed to stand next to her and and talk to her the whole time. She had an “elephants trunk” (gas mask) on and she practiced with just oxygen for a while. They gave her a choice of smells (something they rubbed on the inside of the mask I think). They very gradually turned up the sedation so it was not at all dramatic. Then there was numbing injections etc (IIRC she was sediated by that point). She didn’t feel a thing or get distressed at any point. She was awake but chilled.

Before any tooth pulling and after the sedation/numbing there was quite a lot of prep around the extra tooth, a curvy thing going round the edges to loosen it. The actual extraction took about 5 seconds. Then they brought her round and she was fine, like nothing has happened !! The staff were absolutely amazing.

as it was gas sedation at the local dental hospital we were allowed to take the teeth home - they presented them in a little envelope with a fairy on. Daughter was a bit drowsy for a couple of hours and had sofa time. Then it was like nothing had happened.

Oh and she got a fiver from the tooth fairy for her braveness so she was made up.

This just makes me want to have the things out now and be done with it rather than having to wait until next year to see “how things go”

i had myself all prepped for his dental hospital appt thinking they would do it then but it’s a 9 month review - just feels like it’s being dragged out

I will say that in our case the extra tooth had erupted (though not fully, we could only see the tip of the iceberg) and was able to be gripped and yanked out. Perhaps that’s the difference… I do remember chasing things several times though. I hope you get some progress soon and keep us posted !

Pompompurin1 · 06/06/2025 21:15

as a complete lay person I wonder if they could pull the left baby tooth out to make things more down more … no idea what I’m talking about though!
