If you changed careers at 45...

I'm in a rut! I need to change careers but I just don't know what to do.

I live fairly rurally and so that limits things somewhat. I need to earn a decent wage (but am willing to work up to get there).

I don't want to have to go back to uni but would do some retraining and on the job qualifications.

I just don't know what to do. I've previously worked in marketing and I've just fallen out of love with it.

So, if you changed career, what did you change from and to. How has that worked out for you?

Changed from working in mental health, to teaching on-line from home. I did OU to get a degree and my commute is now 10 steps.

Love it!

What do you currently do op and what salary min do you need?

Clickjaw · 05/06/2025 16:09

Do you drive?

DoYouReally · 05/06/2025 16:15

Could you move sideways over a series of moves.

A friend did something like this:

  1. Worked with a marketing agency (pre Covid,)

  2. Moved to a marketing, customer engagement and analytics role with a multi national

  3. Then move to a higher more data and analytics (no marketing) with the same company

(Think she was about 3 years there maybe more)

  1. Left there and now works in Change Management, mainly involved in projects where she's responsible for eliminate of manual process by rolling out automation and AI projects.

All of her retraining/new qualifications was pretty time, some work funded but others self funded.

Changed similar age. From marketing related to Content Design. I’m a contractor, it’s well paid. If your English is excellent (grammar etc) and you are used to CMSs it’s a good shout.

TidyingThePantry · 05/06/2025 17:31

Yes, I do drive.

I'd like to move away from Marketing completely really and am looking for something new. I just don't know what.

Change management could be a possibility.

Do you currently have a job in marketing op? Or were you in marketing when you last worked?

what salary bracket are you in?

What do you teach?

English Language is the main thing, but also help students who want to take the TOEIC / IELTS tests

EmberR · 05/06/2025 19:56

I’m in a very similar position @TidyingThePantry 20 years marketing experience and now BORED and hating the politics. I’m considering studying to be a psychologist - but it takes 2 years and is quite pricey. But I am only 43 and can’t do this for another 20 years…

TidyingThePantry · 05/06/2025 20:08

@EmberRwhat job would you be looking to go into? I know Psychology is a feeder for HR roles traditionally.

It's hard, isn't it.

@clickjawyes - I'm currently working earning £60k on a 0.8 FTE

What industries are in your area? Pharma? Tech? Finance? Etc

TidyingThePantry · 05/06/2025 20:15

I've worked in Finance mainly but like @EmberR, I'm just bored of this and am looking to change. I'm not sure what to though.

But what do you do now? Marketing or finance?

Glitchymn1 · 05/06/2025 20:24

Yes. I was on housing management, senior level.
Sideways move and a pay cut into fraud management. Short course of study and some police interview techniques.

MarySueSaidBoo · 05/06/2025 20:26

I went from healthcare to business administrator for a small business (just happened to be DH's!). I do the finances, all the office admin, ordering, stock control and deal with clients as well as HR. Jack of all trades and master of none, but I do enjoy it especially the client part in the showroom (interior design). We meet some great reps too, and I love finding out about how things are designed/made/sourced - I've got an inquisitive mind.

HellaElla · 05/06/2025 20:27

I could have written this! Same industry, same salary and FTE, same age, same feeling that I want a change! I also feel directionless as to what to pivot towards.

TidyingThePantry · 05/06/2025 20:52

Hi@HellaEllaMaybe I should become a career coach for ex marketers Smile

The fraud management sounds fascinating. I would be rubbish at interviewing people though. I'm far too gullible.

I work in marketing within the finance sector. I want out of that completely.

Marketing to Project Management. Lots of transferable skills :)

Haha yes I’d pay for that service! In theory marketing has so many transferable skills but for myself I can’t see the wood for the trees and unpick what that means in practice.

What sort of marketing do you do? It’s a huge field. That might help people unpick what sort of skills and strengths you have. So for example are you more in the creative side or the data driven side?

In theory for some marketing careers which are a bit more data focused I feel like tech might be a good option, eg if analytics and reporting are a part of your role.

Or if you are a bit more focused on content, writing etc then maybe media and PR?

Or if you are more creative content then perhaps design?

Or if more strategic planning then project management?

Hate to say it but training to be a psychologist takes a lot longer than 2 years. Clinical psychology requires a masters or undergraduate degree in psychology, lots of work experience and then a 3 year doctorate and it is highly competitive. Counselling and educational psychologists require a doctorate too and forensic psychologists require a doctorate or masters plus supervised practice
