To be a little anxious about Greece holiday?

Just regarding the recent spike in larger earthquakes? I know they have lots of small quakes every year but the news recently is making me anxious. Larger earthquakes and tsunami alerts are quite scary when you're due to travel there soon.

I don't know if it's just usual travel nerves or if I'll spend the whole holiday on edge but it's certainly making me not look forward to our first holiday in a few years!

YABU it's unlikely to affect you
YANBU I wouldn't go if I was you

Greece has lots of small earthquakes every single day. It's not often there's a big earthquake. I went to Kos last year, without issue and we're travelling to Zante in August, and I'm not worried at all.

We’ve just got back from Kos, me and the DC slept through the 5.8 one in the early hours of yesterday. DH woke up a bit alarmed but if he hadn’t have felt it I’d have never known there was one. Very much business as usual there.

I am a very anxious traveller and did fret about it beforehand having seen one in the news but I’d imagine they’re set up structurally for earthquakes as they get them so often

I am also due to go to Greece with my family this summer (on a cruise actually). First time there for my dh and kids. Like you, I am worried about earthquakes but also tsunamis what with being at sea etc.

However, I did vote YABU as I wouldn't and won't be cancelling my trip! Just trying not to think too much about it tbh.

MidnightPatrol · 04/06/2025 20:44

Are you typically anxious?

I don’t think there’s much to worry about - maybe if the infrastructure of where you were visiting had collapsed or something, but not just because you’ve read about an earthquake doesn’t mean it’s suddenly very high risk.

Caroparo52 · 04/06/2025 20:46

I'm currently in Crete. It's business as usual here

Quornflakegirl · 04/06/2025 20:47

I’ve been visiting Greece every year for decades and only experience two earthquakes. Loud and unnerving but never a dangerous one yet.

volingaround · 04/06/2025 20:50

It's very normal. The vast majority of the buildings are built to withstand them (I have family out there).

Clearinguptheclutter · 04/06/2025 20:50

I spent two years in Tokyo which is one of the most earthquakey places on earth

earthquakes can be quite interesting if you’re not used to them- the vast majority are harmless

It’s just a game of statistics. Statistically you are very very unlikely to be affected. But if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time you could be totally fucked.

Just read there was another earthquake in the early hours this morning and a 14 year old girl has died 😳 😕 😢

Pompompurin1 · 04/06/2025 21:36

I believe the girl died as she panicked and jumped from a balcony.

I am following this thread as my and DC due to go to Crete soon and am apprehensive (I know that they have small ones regularly but it’s the big ones , tsunamis warnings etc…)

This made me laugh as it's more my style of thinking usually but this has just worried me more than usual.

To the poster who asked if I was usually an anxious person. Not day to day but I do get anxious about holidays a little more than I should as one of my children has health issues and anxiety and the story of the teen who died due to a panic attack has just made me think a little more seriously about the risks. She would freak out if she felt an earthquake so I'm debating explaining (in a preteen friendly 'this probably won't happen but if it does' kinda way) that we may feel some tremors but they're nothing to worry about or just saying nothing and hope we don't experience any.

Never been in this position before and kind of glad to see I'm not alone in the worry as it's actually settled me a little knowing I'm not (too) crazy and it's a worry for others too.

I won't be cancelling but I will definitely do some reading on what to do if a bigger one occurs as the last thing DD needs is me freaking out!

I have just checked that my emergency alerts notifications are enabled on my phone. When we get to Greece, we can also enable earthquake alerts specifically. Not yet though as don't apply to the UK.

NeedWineNow · 04/06/2025 22:27

We're off to Greece in the summer and have been going to same place for years. It has never bothered us before and doesn't now.

Bryonyberries · 04/06/2025 23:03

My daughter is going to Rhodes on Friday, the earthquake news has made me a little apprehensive but hopefully there won’t be any bigger ones.
