Or am I incredibly unlucky? Thinking of giving up driving

I’ve had 4 speeding tickets in 3 months. None of them were badly over the limit. 35 in a 30 x3 and 58 on a smart motorway which had been limited to 50. I was unaware of any of these until I got the letters. First one I did a speed awareness course for. Other 3 I’ve had to take the points. So 9 points on my license now. One more offence and I’m banned.

Thing is, I’ve been driving for nearly 35 years and never had a single one before. What’s going on? Should I consider giving up driving?

No, just pay more attention to your speed.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 04/06/2025 18:46

Give up driving if you want, or just start driving with care and pay attention!

PurpleLemonade7 · 04/06/2025 18:55

Try paying attention when you're driving. I believe the DVLA website has a road sign study section for learners where you can learn what the signs mean.

LlynTegid · 04/06/2025 18:56

Lower gear in 30mph areas could help, and pay more attention. Smaller less powerful car perhaps.

In addition to paying more attention.

seenabeena · 04/06/2025 19:06

I would highly recommend the Waze app, live traffic, user reporting speed cameras etc & audible speed limit, its brilliant 👍🏻

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 04/06/2025 19:08

Do you have cruise control? I stick mine on whenever I can now, it really helps from accidentally drifting those couple of miles over when you're on long stretches etc.

The 30 limit ones really aren't difficult though, we've all seen those horrendous videos of the difference in outcome from a few mph more. I found my speed awareness course very helpful!

bumblebeedum · 04/06/2025 19:10

I don’t think it’s ’unlucky’ to not notice a limiter on a smart motorway, they’re pretty frequent and obvious so pay more attention.

Marble10 · 04/06/2025 19:11

No but They put up more and more cameras now to catch people. Just stay alert and aware of your speed.

Twinstudy · 04/06/2025 19:16

You're not unlucky, you just drive too fast 😄don't speed and you won't get done. I mean we've all gone over the limit I'm sure but if you're doing 58 your speedo is probably saying like 61. Just pay attention!

lnks · 04/06/2025 19:17

You’re not unlucky, you’re just a bad driver.

Bikergran · 04/06/2025 19:18

Get a car with a speed limiter function, and use it!

Icedcaramelfrappe · 04/06/2025 19:19

Just stop speeding and you will stop getting tickets 😎

londongirl12 · 04/06/2025 19:19

Not unlucky, just driving badly!! Use your speed limiter if you have one. Or pay more attention!!

House0fBamboo · 04/06/2025 19:21

Definitely not unlucky, just shit at being aware of what you're doing whilst driving. Pay attention and you won't get a ticket...

maddening · 04/06/2025 19:24

Use cruise control

Watch your speed

FullOfLemons · 04/06/2025 19:30

You have probably been speeding for years

There are more cameras around today and that’s why you are being caught out.

If you have a modern car then it will come with a speed limiter.

Typically as you approach the limit it will make it harder to go faster by modifying behaviour of gas pedal and then if you are over limit by say 10% it will start going boing until you slow down. It is annoying but helpful.

It is also possible that you are not as good at driving as you used to be.

I don’t think luck comes into it. sorry

CraftyNavySeal · 04/06/2025 19:33

Cruise control is a pain if you’re not on the motorway.

You can put google maps on your phone and set it to beep whenever you’re over the limit

Okdaisy · 04/06/2025 19:36

Not true. They put speed cameras in places where there have been accidents

SilenceInside · 04/06/2025 19:39

As everyone else has said, drive slower and with more care and attention, rather than give up driving. Get the additional devices to warn you if you think they will help.

This. ^ You're only unlucky @Tusktusk because you keep getitng caught. STOP SPEEDING! (You don't need to stop driving!)

Dunnocantthinkofone · 04/06/2025 19:54

If you’ve been consistently driving over the limit for 35 years and only recently started being caught, I’d say you’d been exceptionally lucky rather than unlucky!

It’s not hard. If you want to keep driving, drive slower!

Buxusmortus · 04/06/2025 19:57

If you've become unable to notice speed signs then I wonder what other road signs you're missing too. If you're incapable of noticing road signs and controlling your car's speed then yes, you should consider give up driving because you're clearly unsafe on the road.
I've been driving for 44 years and am still capable of keeping to speed limits and have never had a ticket.( In Wales too where nearly every road in a residential area is now 20mph, I know someone who got a ticket going at 24mph).

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 04/06/2025 20:11

Don't you have a limiter in your car? I thought all cars had them.

PinkyFlamingo · 04/06/2025 20:16

How are you missing the signs warning you there is a speed camera?

Mrsttcno1 · 04/06/2025 20:18

If you can’t help speeding or aren’t capable of reading the speed limit signs then yes you shouldn’t be driving.
