Passport confusion

I need to apply for a British passport for my DC, which will need to be supported by their dads passport as I am not a British citizen. My DC have minimal/no contact with their dad (of their own choosing). He is a pretty difficult person to deal with. I'm trying to work out how to do the online application and what exactly I will need him to do, so that I can try and get him to agree to do it.

What I can't work out is: If you do the online application - do you need to send the parents passport in by post? Or do you verify it online?

Can anyone help me with an answer for this? The Gov website simply says "If you apply online, you’ll be told what documents you need to provide." But I don't want to get through the application without first getting his agreement to do whatever is needed (sending his passport in by post e.g).

I'd contact the passport office directly then you know you're getting the right information. 'But Mumsnet said this would be ok' isn't really a defence if it gets knocked back.

If you ring them they are usually very helpful. However whenever I’ve applied for my children’s passport they usual verify with the parents passport number and expiration date I’ve never had to send mine in nor has the children father. Xx

When we applied for DSS passport we had to supply DH passport number on the application. When I applied for mine I had to send original documents to proof my Mothers divorce & second marriage, my name change etc & they don’t guarantee that you will get original docs back so I doubt they would want his original passport.

You can apply at the post office and they will help you get the correct documents for your application. My local one is brilliant.

My eldest dc were born abroad and their df is not from the UK. I think I only had to answer a few questions on the form and add my passport details.

It's his passport details he needs to provide. It doesn't get sent in with the application.
Are you married to him?
You'll need your own passport details and the childrens' long birth certificates and someone who can countersign the application. If its an online application, you will need to provide an email address for the person countersigning
Also need a passport photo

If you can get dads passport number and issue date then great. You will need to send away your current passport if it’s from a different country. The children’s full birth certificates and they could ask for grandparents details on a separate piece of paper.

When I applied for DC passports they asked questions about DH including things like passport number etc and remember thinking how easy it was and that they didn’t even email him to say that an application was being made. That being said, I don’t remember if they asked for his address and if the fact that it was the same as ours meant they didn’t need to.
