I am not from the UK originally, but I would love to get a better understanding on the bellow.

Is the norm here in the UK for GP Doctors to feel superior to others? The reason why I am asking is because I have come across some family members of my friend who are doctors and the level of entitlement and how they speak towards others who are not doctors is astonishing.

Calling people stupid, because they are not doctors, making fun of their patients calling them poor and stupid.

I have family members in Europe who are Doctors but I have never heard of them behaving this way.

Apparently, their whole circle is with doctors and this is how they all behave.

I am not judging, but would love to understand and if you have a friend or family member and if this is how they behave towards others who are not doctors.

No that's not normal. I'd say consultant surgeons often have an air of superiority. Due to the work they do and how the hierarchy works in medicine.

But certainly not any other type of doctor I've ever encountered. GPs need to deal with front line symptoms and meet many different people each day and make decisions about them. They certainly wouldn't get far going round telling people they were stupid.

I think you've just been unlucky. They are clearly not in the least bit emotionally intelligent or even polite if they insult people's intellect levels.

If your own doctor said such things then you should make a complaint against them and not see them again.

dogcatkitten · 04/06/2025 12:02

We used to bump into our Doctor in the pub once in a while, he was pretty ordinary out of the office and rather nice. Not so much in his consulting room where he was a bit of a dragon!

I guess in situations where it's all Doctor's they talk shop and maybe show off a bit. Not something I recognise, but I don't travel in those circles.

AlteredStater · 04/06/2025 12:09

I do think some must be like that due to the poor way some treat patients. If you move in chronic illness circles then you'll hear many patients with complaints about how they are treated, especially if you are a woman. So that doesn't surprise me tbh.

Pinty · 04/06/2025 12:13

No it isn't normal for GPs to behave like that. I have never met a doctor who behaves like that. My doctors have always been very professional and compassionate.

But Doctors are people, some people are horrible and some aren't.

Deerrobin · 04/06/2025 12:13

Not typical for the doctors, including GPs, that I know personally.

gamerchick · 04/06/2025 12:16

Is this another UK bashing thread. It's been a day or so since the last one.

Summerflower234 · 04/06/2025 12:17

@gamerchick No, not bashing at all! I asked a question to understand better if this is normal around here.

My late father was a GP and had various friends who were also GPs. I don't remember any of them behaving as you describe

KrisAkabusi · 04/06/2025 12:29

No, I've never come across this. Certainly not calling people stupid because they are not doctors!

CleanShirt · 04/06/2025 12:31

No. That person is just a prick.

RunningJo · 04/06/2025 12:33

Not something I have encountered ever. I have a couple of friends who are Dr's and nothing like you have described. I can't imagine them looking down on anyone, let alone because someone isn't a Dr.

Princesspollyyy · 04/06/2025 12:36

I know a GP that behaves like that, and he’s not popular. The other GP’s I know are really nice and speak to others on the same level, so not superior.

Maybe if you get into conversation with a GP who thinks they are superior, just ask them did they always want to be a GP and not a consultant?

HoskinsChoice · 04/06/2025 12:40

Yeah, not to the extreme that you're talking about, but I have a couple of doctors in the family who are incredibly arrogant. The unions, the media and the general public but doctors and nurses on such a pedestal. They're treated as heroes rather than just doing a job and my family members seem to believe the hype. They also have absolutely no idea of the real working world outside of the NHS. One of them in particular genuinely believes she's hard done to, compared to the private sector, about her working hours and other T&Cs. She's so out of touch it's unreal.

GabriellaMontez · 04/06/2025 12:41

I don't know any GPs like that. I think it may be the ones you've met.

Perhaps as they're all members of the same family they share a similar attitude.

MumChp · 04/06/2025 12:45

No, that's not the norm or I've never encountered it. It's a terrible generalization of a large number of people.

feelingbleh · 04/06/2025 12:49

No not normal. Gps are people in any large group of people you will get arseholes. That's like saying are all mcdondalds workers or all teachers like this. The answer is some are most aren't. Surely as an adult you understand this

dddilemma · 04/06/2025 12:56

I have a couple of family members who are doctors & their friends are too. Never heard any of them call someone stupid

Orangemintcream · 04/06/2025 13:41

Based on how I have been treated on more than one occasion I would say yes for some member of the profession.

Probably not all but still too many.
