I never thought grown adults would have friendship issues.

How wrong I was 😭

@comeandhaveteawithme I’ve just always said partner since we met. When we worked together I would always call him my partner in lime because I used to make him chop all the bar fruits. But we are married, it just feels weird saying husband it feels wrong like it’s his title. I know some people prefer it because it’s gender neutral but for us it’s just habitual.

The fact that nobody really knows what they're doing and we're all just bluffing our way through life hoping for the best outcome.

As a child and young adult, I had a sweetly naive belief that the government / UN / WHO etc were run by proper grown-ups capable of sorting out crises and making good decisions.

Now as an actual adulty adult, I realise that's mostly bollocks and we're all just teenagers cosplaying as responsible 40-somethings.

LettingyougoMovingOn · 04/06/2025 13:27

Adulthood is far far better than the child me could have imagined. I cannot relate to the carefree/ happy/ idyllic childhood experience of which people talk.

That aside i did think I'd just take myself to Alton towers/ Chessington world of adventure/ etc every weekend when i could Afford to and that hasn't happened. That said I am very good at taking myself to the cinema/ for a nice coffee so maybe i just need to up my game

I assumed adult life was going to look like Alexis's life in Dynasty. I'd spent my time sweeping down staircases and into my huge offices, sporting huge shoulder pads. I'd conduct international deals from my bubble bath, on my high tech cordless phone. I'd drink champagne all the time.
Any day now...

I used to wonder why adults are obsessed with money.

amicisimma · 04/06/2025 14:15

I am disappointed to find that now that I can eat as much ice cream as I want, I don't really seem to want much.

I also was very concerned about quicksand!

I thought that certain grownups would automatically behave correctly, and only realised my naivety in college days.
When I was at teacher training college, our post was delivered to the Junior Common Room and placed in pigeonholes. Phoning home involved the communal callbox, things such as money orders were rarer, so a common way of a kindly parent giving a cheering "sub" to student DC would be a letter, with a banknote or postal order slipped inside.
There was a great uproar when some errant student (don't know if they were caught, but it stopped as suddenly as it started) sneakily went through the pigeonholes at some quiet moment, opening envelopes not addressed to them and filching any money enclosed,
I suffered no losses myself, but I remember being deeply shocked by the realisation that somebody training to be a teacher could stoop to stealing. However much I may have grumbled about the people who taught me, I had assumed that they were moral people.

I always looked forward to being able to go where I want, whenever I wanted but appears I have neither the time or the money to live like that. Plus that 10:30pm bedtime that I couldn’t wait to ditch actually suits me perfectly, I even have a little reminder set of my phone to start getting ready!

I thought I'd spend my days looking after children and doing housework until my husband came home. Then I'd put on lipstick and high heels and go out in the car (in the front seat!) somewhere where I'd have drinks with cherries in and smoke cigarettes. I'd have a huge purse full of pound notes and get to choose to buy cake if I wanted. Sometimes I saw myself going to an office and clacking on a big old typewriter.

Never in my wildest childhood dreams did I imagine that I'd ever dye my hair to make it more red rather than less!

ThymeSageRosemary · 04/06/2025 16:54

I always imagined it would be very possible to live a 'simple life', you know in a farmhouse with a few acres of land, some chickens and a wood burning stove. NO. Turns out you need millions of pounds.

IwasDueANameChange · 04/06/2025 18:05

Definitely didn't realise houses don't maintain themselves and there's a constant outflow of money replacing boilers, repairing plumbing, replacing knackered kitchens etc

I have stepped in quicksand, though, and I was grateful to know what it was and what to do 😁 The much younger friend I was with had no clue and just stared at me

Oh wow! I'd like to know more.

Or should I just picture a Five go to Smugglers Top situation?
