To think that in life, you just need to have thick skin?

It seems like people take offence at everything these days. But in reality, life isn’t always fair, people can be rude, and not everyone will like you. I think the best way to handle it is to develop thick skin and not take things personally. AIBU to think that people who are easily offended or overly sensitive just make life harder for themselves?

I’m not sure. I have relatively thick skin and I have certainly witnessed others take offence when I would not. But at the end of the day we’re all different and we have different triggers as well as some people are just more sensitive than others. Maybe it does make their life harder, I don’t know, but being more sensitive may also enrich your life in other ways.

Offence seems to be a popular topic tonight, this is the second post on it.

Whilst I agree that a tough skin can be valuable (especially at work), I don’t think taking offence is always a bad thing.

If people hadn’t taken offence, we wouldn’t have laws against sexism, racism, ableism etc.

What methods do you suggest people use to thicken their skin?

Edit- didn't mean to quote OP and now can't delete it!

Yes and no.

Yes, you need to be resilient and relatively confident in your abilities and opinions to be able to go about your life in a happy and contented way.

No, because the people who expect others to have a thick skin tend to use this as an excuse to be rude/insensitive (in my experience).

No. I get more and more tired of openly rude people. Get some manners! It's not hard.

I went to a funeral a few days ago. Spoke to two people who made derogatory comments about the deceased. Why go if you've nothing nice to say? One was a sibling. Last chance to get the boot in or have the last word!
