Would you take your 6 year old to this musical?

It’s Grease! She loves musicals and would love the songs and dances but not sure if some of the themes would be too mature (I think all that would go over her head).

YABU: no I wouldn’t take my 6 year old
YANBU: yes I would take my 6 year old

Grease the musical is different to Grease the movie as well - fine if you hadn’t seen the film but can be jarring if you love the film.

I think 6 is a bit young for some of the references (although I did take Dd to Mamma Mia at that age and that does have similar) and is also I think a little darker than the movie

Yes - it was one of my favorite things around that age. I had an old CD of it, that I used to play... then my parents rented the movie for me. Great memories.

I had no idea what it was all about.

Watched it later as an adult, and finally understood the plot.

Cool car, teenage boys and girls doing things. a sleepover, shes nice, shes nasty, aww they get together, wow look at that fairground. That was about my understanding.

Take her, and then sing all the songs on the way home.

I'm in the 'why is it great the Sandy changes herself to win the guy?' camp. Not my idea of a happy ending.

I think the sex references would go over a 6 year old's head but then why knowingly take her to see something that goes over her head? I'm not sure that's enjoyable for kids, lots of stuff they supect is 'grown up' and which they don't understand.

To be fair - he changes himself as well. I've always understood it as a show of commitment. He goes all 'preppy', tries to join sports teams, dresses up nicely etc. And she shows that she has a bit of a wild side.

Well children go to Pantomime’s and there is a lot of innuendo ! They still love it and the adults are entertained 🤷‍♀️

There is, and I cringe for the cast and find it utterly pathetic. I know pantos aren't meant to be the pinnacle of wit but surely "ooooh, that's funny because it's a bit sex related" "there's a joke for the dads, wink wink" can be dropped by now.

I just avoid the theatres we know put on those types of Pantos, which are usually the bigger more expensive ones with more celebrities, so I accept that I'm in the minority and clearly lots of people disagree.

While I'm on one, one of my massive bugbears with children's films is when they throw in loads of obvious jokes / references clearly just for the adults. It's just cynical attempts to capture a bigger audience and ticket sales by trying to get the parents to like it too so they take the kids to see it /put it on at home. But the really good shows don't need that. Bit irrelevant to the Grease question I know, sorry OP!

Take her. A lot of the more mature content will go straight over her head. I only got the true meaning of "Grease lightning" a few years ago and I'm early 50s 🤦‍♂️😁

Dd is 8 and I took her to see Grease two years ago. She absolutely loved it! Adult themes/ speak went over her head (and actually, there's probably more of it in the film version) and she knew all the songs by heart. No way would I have taken ds when he was that age (totally different type of child!) but if your daughter likes the songs and dances and is likely to stay entertained for 2 hours (which is a long time to sit still), I'd absolutely recommend it. Dd got a bit fidgety, but easily remedied by snacks!
