5 yo daily meltdowns…normal or not?

Our DD just turned 5 and is generally quite nice. Has friends at school and the teachers think she is great apparently.

However on average once per day she has a full on meltdown and screams at me or DW. Often before breakfast. Only lasts 5 minutes or so but is pretty spectacular! Then she is chilled for the rest of the day. This doesnt seem right to me!

YABU - this is quite normal at that age

YANBU - this is something to worry about!

thanks all!

Is she getting enough sleep? Has she been unwell lately and has anything changed recently?

BarnacleBeasley · 03/06/2025 20:44

She might just be really hungry. We have to wake our 4yo up with a cup of milk and an oatcake or he struggles to hold it together to get dressed and down for breakfast.

Sleep is good nowadays and not sick. Dont think much has changed. Good tips though!

its been like this for quite a while. Not sure how long exactly.

Following… my 5 year old is also having the most dramatic meltdowns everyday. Over the smallest thing. If I don’t look her directly in the face with every single thing she says to me she’ll throw herself to the floor and scream and kick and cry that I’m not listening or I’m not looking at her so I’m not listening, but I have a 3 year old, and I need to get shit done so I’m often talking while cooking, cleaning, getting kids dressed, showering ect🤣

she also doesn’t let me finish what I’m saying if she thinks it’s going to be a negative outcome so immediately started screaming and crying. Like if she picks up a chocolate bar and asks if she can have it, if I say “not right now, but you can have it after dinner” immediately after “not” she just goes into full temper tantrum. (Not about chocolate but as an expample)

I really hope I’m not alone

Could be! Although we do get the meltdowns at more random times during the weekend. Good tip! Will try the oatcake!
