Dishwashers typically use less water than washing up by hand several times a day.

I've just been whining about this. Our monthly payment has just leapt from £80 to £139. 5 people, tons of washing, tons of dishwasher, bath every night/teenagers constantly in the shower. I thought there's been some mistake, but maybe not Grin

We have the same situation as you but even more expensive - £171 a month!!!!!

LuckysDadsHat · 04/06/2025 19:12

We are paying £90 a month on a meter with the robbing gits Wessex Water. Yours sounds like a bargain!

edwinbear · 04/06/2025 19:13

We’re also Thames Water who forced us onto a meter. 2 adults, 2 teens. DS runs so does use a lot (shower in the morning and a bath in the evening), washing machine goes on once a day, dishwater every couple of days. Our usage hasn’t actually changed at all though and our DD has gone from £63pm to £110. DS has been told to have a post run shower rather than bath, but I feel scammed.

NegroniMacaroni · 04/06/2025 19:16

I'm with Affinity. Metered prices went up 19%, whilst non metered increased by 29%! Due to us being in a maisonette / shared supply they claimed they couldn't fit a meter. But, after some prodding, it turns out that they can place us on a tariff that takes into account the number of occupants / usage - first they needed to send an engineer to confirm that we definitely can't fit a meter, and then I had to call again to request the adjusted tariff. Price went down from £60/m to £40/m (2 adults 1 child).

LakieLady · 04/06/2025 19:19

Southern Water, just me, metered and currently paying £25.30 a month, but that's based on last year's prices. They're putting up their charges by 46%, so it will be shedloads more.

I never run the dishwasher or washing machine unless it's full, I guess around every 5 or 6 days on average. I shower daily, but don't stay in there for long.

They read my meter around June or July, and only do it once a year. They base the monthly payment on the amount used in the previous year. It occurred to me the other day that I will be paying the increased price for water that was mostly used before the prices went up in April!

TotHappy · 04/06/2025 19:21

Mines gone up to 114 pm. Cornwall as others have said. 5 of us incl. 3 kids under 10, we do have a lot of washing and I worked out that it was accurate ish to our usage - but their unit prices are far too high! We have to pay more now for them to invest in the aging infrastructure so they can improve their record of pumping raw sewage into the sea, do we? Why couldn't THEY pay for that from their enormous profits since privatisation? Why couldn't they do, you know, their job?

JaffaCakesAreHalfMoon · 04/06/2025 19:26

£125 per month 😭 South West water as well. We’re still on the old
style rates system and I’m tempted to switch to a meter but not sure it would be any cheaper, 2 children/2 adults.

geminiflanagan · 04/06/2025 19:28

South west water, 2 adults and a tween - £114 per month 😬

NeedASafeSpace · 04/06/2025 19:30

I was unmetered. 3 bed terrace, but just me. Paid £40pm.
Went metered. Now about £16pm.

I’m having issues with Thames water. I’m a single parent to one 5 year old in a two bedroom flat. I’m quite frugal, don’t fill bath to the top or leave tap running when brushing teeth etc. But my bill has gone from £22 a month to £114.

For context, my mum is a four bedroom house, she constantly uses the hose in her garden, she has 6 people have at least one bath daily in the house, she has a dishwasher (that I don’t have) and has her washing machine on at least 3 times a day - she pays £50 a month. So the fact that I’m being charged £114 is barbaric and I’m pretty stressed as they’re telling me it’s ‘accurate’ for my usage and no one is helping me.

i think this is the worst year I have seen with water companies charging people insane prices and scamming their customers

How are they charging money like that Are you not on a meter? Mine I pay £16 a month and am £53 in credit

Supersares · 04/06/2025 19:36

hi you can go onto a water meter for 12 months and if you decide you don’t want to keep it they have to let you revert back to unmeasured supply. It will depend on how many people live in your house and on your usage however for a two bed, I would say definitely go onto a meter as should work out cheaper.

Pebbles16 · 04/06/2025 19:36

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 03/06/2025 16:32

I got an unmetered quote of £60 per month for a 2 bed flat in London- just me and dd

Unsure whether to go for a meter myself, or just take lots and lots of showers

@mumofoneAlonebutokay get a meter. I have one. We actually use very little water and - back in the day - overpaid a lot.
I think the rule of thumb is: number of rooms vs number of occupants

I’m a bit puzzled why posters are giving the size of their property, if they have a water meter. What difference would that possibly make? Just state how many people in your household, washing machine and dishwasher use, and if you have a garden to water.

Edited

when i moved in the first thing water company asked for was number of bedrooms....same with electric suplier and phone company

I did online check to see what metered would be and it came out 45 MORE per month, we hardly use any!

BlondeFeatures · 04/06/2025 20:07

Severn Trent - 3 bed semi but now single household, daily showers, 2 x clothes washes and dishwasher per week (more when uni/adult kids visit!), garden watered daily when it's hot but average once per week. When bills got to £80+ a few months ago, I called to question it and switched to a metre. Now £17-24 on average. Result!

Do you not use any water?? I’m pretty sure my standing charge with TW amounts to £16 a month!

Yes of course I bath at least 4 times a week and shower the rest. Plus water for drinking and cooking. Off to look at Bill for service charge now

Thames Water's standing charge for water and wastewater services in the 2025-26 billing period is £63.96 for water and £130.22 for wastewater

It seems pretty unlikely your bill is less than £16 a month when the standing charges amount to £16.11

That’s because they assume that all bedrooms are occupied! They normally also ask how many adults are in the property. I live alone, but I have 3 bedrooms. My water meter shows exactly how much water I use, the same as my electric and gas meters show how much power I use.

According to mine is £161 for water/sewerage.( Essex/angllan) Plus £96 credit from last year which pays a good chunk of it. The £16 a month adds another £192;on top

My bill for 6 months amounted to being £16.63pm, and that is with Thames Water.

We're on a meter - 2 adults and 2 children. 60 pounds a month

In my last property (Thames water) four adults, no meter - cost was less than what I pay now in Wiltshire (Wessex water) with just two adults and a meter. Currently £50 a month and we are careful with our usage. Couple of loads of washing a week, dishwasher five days out of seven and a couple of quick showers a day. I don’t think meters are necessarily cheaper.

I think Wessex are fleecing us 😂 I’m unmetered and pay £94/month for 10 months of the year.

whenever I do the calculators it tells me i’ll be paying more or the same on a meter. 3 people in a 3 bed house.

I don’t mind paying for clean safe drinking water because what a luxury to have it on tap, but I feel pissed off at paying sewerage when half of it seems to be discharged untreated these days

Exactly! We are also south west water and unit prices have increased by 30%
