To think there’s not much point returning to work late in the week after being off sick?

I was off sick yesterday, today and I’m still not feeling great. Realistically, I might not be back until Thursday or Friday. At that point, is it even worth it? It feels like I’d just be dragging myself in for a day or two, only to crash again over the weekend.

I know some people think you should return as soon as you’re able but I wonder if it’s better to take the full week to recover properly. AIBU to think that returning late in the week might not be the best idea?

Perhaps take a couple of days holiday?!

Danioyellow · 03/06/2025 16:32

What are you sick with? I go to work to put a roof over my kids heads, plus I’ve got clients and other staff relying on me, so I’d be back as soon as humanly possible

Danioyellow · 03/06/2025 16:32

Hang on, do you work the weekends?

Konstantine8364 · 03/06/2025 16:33

Depends on your job. If nobody covers your work/clients etc don't suffer when you're off then have the days off and catch up next week. If (like in 95% of jobs) other people have to work harder or the business provides a lesser service get your arse into work if you're well enough.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 03/06/2025 16:33

If you're better, you should go back to work.

If you're still unwell, you should stay off sick.

It really isn't that complicated.

Youdontseehow · 03/06/2025 16:33

I hope you’re not in an important job @ForQuietBronzeFox ! Most people don’t have the luxury of a week to recover from non life threatening illnesses.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 03/06/2025 16:33

😄 I personally advocate for taking the week off

Let's see how the thread goes

purpleme12 · 03/06/2025 16:34

You're either well enough to go in or you're not
If you are then go in

Divebar2021 · 03/06/2025 16:34

What kind of job is it? Is someone having to cover for you in your absence or is it a case that your work will sit there waiting for you until you get back. I would go back in because I would feel bad letting colleagues cover for me.

Tadahhh · 03/06/2025 16:34

No, don’t worry, just bunk off, what’s the point?

Clearly if you’re getting paid, they don’t care that Thurs and Friday is 40% of the week.

Oh hang on, your winding me up 😂 Got me

steff13 · 03/06/2025 16:35

I would always go back, even if it's for one day.

Snugglemonkey · 03/06/2025 16:37

There is a great deal of point to me going back. Staying off lets down clients, plus I am self employed, so every day off is a day with no earnings. I only have time off if I cannot function.

MyNeedyLilacBird · 03/06/2025 16:42

Really depends on your job. My husbands his work just piles up, so as soon as he's a bit better he's back. Mine doesn't make much difference, no work piling up.

If your not 100% don't go back until your well.

Bimblebombles · 03/06/2025 16:42

In one day the work I do makes the business perhaps £2,000. And if I'm not in, no one else will be doing it. So yes, of course I'm going in if I'm better. The work would just mount up in my absence anyway and then I'd have more stress going back the week after.

StripyShirt · 03/06/2025 16:50

Be aware that if you take the rest of the week off, the weekend days can count as sickness too, possibly affecting whether or not you can self-certify.

ConstantCringing · 03/06/2025 22:07

Would you be considering taking the full week if you weren't getting paid, or would you be well enough to go back?

uncomfortablydumb60 · 04/06/2025 04:50

If you take Friday off, then weekends count too and you would need a GP sick note
If you feel well enough go in, if not, don't.

OneNewLeader · 04/06/2025 05:52

I wouldn’t go back in, I’d probably post about my dilemma on SM, then enjoy 2 days in the garden ‘getting better/not bothering about work’. Make sure you’re honest with your employer though. No one likes a liar.
