Not really on even if the child is feeling much better or is it?

Well, they still have to eat I suppose. It depends what they have got. My mum used to make days off sick a bit boring though and then we would never be tempted to swing the lead!

Hulababy · 21/05/2008 20:09

Depends on the nature of the illness and why off sick.

TBH if feeling better at lunch time I would take DD back to school for the afternoon session.

Obviously not possible if child has been sick and school has some policy regarding this - in that situation, can;t see problem of taking them out for lunch.

lilyloo · 21/05/2008 20:09

I personally wouldn't no.

Octothechildherder · 21/05/2008 20:10

Depends whether I could be arsed to cook lunch or not! Might just be having a particularly crap day and not feel like cooking.

LIZS · 21/05/2008 20:11

I suppose it depends why off sick (ear infection, on ab's and school won't administer) but would think it odd

suedonim · 21/05/2008 20:15

My ds suffered terribly with asthma. As part of his 'rehab' after serious episodes I wouild take him out and about a bit before letting him back into the school melee.

tortoiseSHELL · 21/05/2008 20:16

Would depend on why they were off. If it was something which wasn't infectious, but rules said they had to be away then yes. If infectious, then almost certainly not.

Fullmoonfiend · 21/05/2008 20:19

ok, extreme example here but: when my ds was 5 he had meningitis. Directly before this he had been unwell for around a week and had not eaten a thing. 12 days in hospital and we kept him off school for a further week as he was weak, and scared and we were all still in shock and needed time to regroup as a family IYKWIM.
Technically speaking though, he was 'better'. But he had lost a lot of weight. Damn right I took him out for lunch and ice creams and out and about...

scottishmummy · 21/05/2008 20:26

VERY unreasonable emanka!depends on the illness depends on the child.dont be so judgey

emkana · 21/05/2008 20:31

oh ffs where was I judgey? If you read the OP I was actually asking a question. How do you know that it's not me who is considering taking her own child out for lunch tomorrow???

OP posts:
scottishmummy · 21/05/2008 20:37

oh unclench and enjoy your lunch then

whatismyname · 21/05/2008 20:40

ds has chicken pox but is full of life we had a picnic in the middle of nowhere today

SlightlyMadSweet · 21/05/2008 20:41

Agree with most...depends on circumstances.

I have to say I would be reluctant in a "in case someone saw me" kind of way.....but thats just me and probably isn't justified and doesn't mean it should be criticised if I did it IYSWIM.

scottishmummy · 21/05/2008 20:43

illness does not necessarily equate to quarantine.so if not contagious, Yes go out to lunch

If the child is feeling much better, it's nowt contageous and she/he is not likely to puke/shit all over the dining area, then I would.

So to answer your question, I believe it is on, dependent on circs. In fact, after an illness that's been bad enought to keep a child off school, it's a nice treat when he/she feels up to it.

not being unreasonable at all. If it makes them feel better and makes life easier

SlartyBartFast · 21/05/2008 20:54

i did today, who saw??

scottishmummy · 21/05/2008 20:57

i recently had day off work as LO had high temp, restless.this resolved and we went for a lovely lunch

Psychomum5 · 21/05/2008 20:59

depends on why.....

my DD3 suffers migraines, and she always needs a couple of days off after a bad one before she can cope with school again (especially as the lighting in school, plus the noise, are normally the triggers)......if it is nice and I have plans....I take her out, if nothing else to give her a change of scene.

DS2, also, has a bowel condition......if he has a bad tummy I can;t send him into school as he becomes incontinent again....it sin;t fair on school to have him, nor for him to go, so I keep him home and take him out if I can too.

BUT

if they have a temp, a tummy bug, are contagious, then no......wouldn;t take them.

cutekids · 21/05/2008 21:07

If I think they're skiving I make the day as boring as possible so that they'll want to go back the next day.
If,however, they've had a few days off and are maybe not quite right but a bit better of if i've had to take one of them to the Docs and he's said "just keep an eye out",I do sometimes take him/her for a "special icecream/fudge cake/etc.". It's generally a release for me from all the worry and as i've very rarely got one on his/her own-3 very close together-I see it as a treat for both of us.Not that I ever wish any one of them to be seriously ill.

annh · 22/05/2008 10:11

Depends on the illness I think, normally I am a firm believer in the mantra of "If you are well enough to play/go out, you are well enough to be in school". However, ds1 has just had two days off with conjunctivitis (or not, another doc's appt this afternoon because it's not clearing - but anyway!) and yesterday I took him out for a bit while I collected something and treated him to an snack in a cafe. In that case, he was quite well apart from a very sore eye which prevented him from being able to focus so he couldn't read, watch tv, use computer etc and I think I was saving both of us by taking him out for a bit!
