Career advice/suggestions

Hi

bit of an odd one I appreciate. My husband is looking for a career move out of the industry he currently works in (11yrs exp in the nuclear decommissioning industry, in waste management, business management, cost control and programme delivery)

he sadly gets no joy from the industry and it’s beginning to really affect him. Does anyone have any advice on places/industries/companies to take a look at?

any advice appreciated. X

Nuclear is quite niche so it can be hard to transition out. It also has an old fashioned/not particularly progressive reputation. He may need to persuade that he is a quick/slick type. An MBA or Lean/six sigma type quals will be useful. Finally, it is also well paid as they factor in 'danger money' albeit the reality is there is no more risk in nuclear than any other heavy engineering industry. He may need to take a drop in salary.

On the more positive side, nuclear projects tend to be big and complex therefore his project management and project controls experience is likely to be impressive. All big construction companies need this type of person, he'll just need to persuade people his sector experience is transferable. Two options - the actual contractors (companies that build roads, railways, tunnels, bridges, hospitals etc) and then there's the consultancies (someone like Jacobs, Foster Wheeler, Fluor if they still exist, I'm out of that sector now). Pharma is potentially a close match to nuclear - companies that build or consult on building major pharma or other types of chemical processing plants. Oil and gas is another close(ish) fit although that's a market in decline for obvious reasons, and quite Scotland focused so may not be ideal depending on where you live. Other types of energy generation might be interesting given the government's push to control our own. Hope that helps!
