YABU.

does he got to an independent school? many of these don't introduce reading until about 6 or 7 as per many european countries.

Pablop · 22/05/2008 18:06

My younger brother couldn't read until he was 7, hes super intelligent, got loads of qualifications, degree and good job.

lucyellensmum · 22/05/2008 18:38

YABtotally and horribly unreasonable. Im sorry but i have seen right through this OP - FFS!!! If your DD is 2.7 and reading?? Well then great, my DD can read an entire book (from memory!) so its not really reading. This post stinks, of look how clever my DD is and oh my, how thick is my friends little boy.

None of your business

"I know I didn't express it well in the first post but I am worried he may have dyslexia and for some reason the school hasn't picked up on it. " when you are in a hole STOP DIGGING!!!! dyslexia is a very specific and actually quite difficult to diagnose learning difficulty, not one for a PFB competitive alpha mummy to diagnose

Im sorry if my post was harsh, but my DD has had speech delay, so may well struggle with her reading, or may not, who knows - but i have had to deal with nasty comments from competitive bitches mothers regarding DDs speech and its made me really paranoid that other mothers think my little girl is thick - i can tell you, it hurts.

I would have thought if your friend has told you he is doing well at school then he IS!!!

lucy
...and breathe...

As a mum of an SN child the competetive mum thing really stops annoying you after a while. You just start to feel sorry for the children upon whom such expectation is placed.
My DS has major speech problems alongside his ASD. It was only when he learnt to read and write that we realised how articulate he is. I love it now when he is so pissed off that his speech dries upo because he passes me a note.
" excuse me mummy. No saying calm down and no sending to bed. Thank you "

I actually can't be bothered to read the whole thread which is very naughty I know but why are you trying to teach a 2yo to read?

HonoriaGlossop · 22/05/2008 18:55

pagwatch, that is BRILLIANT what a character he sounds...

Agree that you need to keep out of this, milliec. When your dd is at school, you will probably realise that there is such a huge variety of 'normal' within the early years that it's just not possible to judge things like this from the outside. Someone was saying (can't remember if on here or in RL!) that in reception the ability range the teacher is dealing with can be described at 2 -12!

sophiajane · 22/05/2008 18:56

Poor kid, leave him and his mum alone - I could not read until I was 7.5, ended up reading English at university.

All kids have different developmental arcs and many "gifted" children plateau in ability after puberty.

dd1 has done well under the jolly phonics system at her last school. It was introduced a couple of years ago but my ds missed out on it. I can really see a difference in thier reading abilites now. However the school that she's in now dosen't do do it and I'm really hoping that will not be the case when dd2 starts school.

can anyone tell me if this phonics way of teaching will ever become compulsory acroos the uk.. we are in wales..

OrmIrian · 22/05/2008 20:04

Peter and Jane? Is that like Janet and John. Never heard of them before.

nkf · 22/05/2008 20:09

Peter and Jane are marvellous. Real period pieces. I wouldn't give one to a nearly three year old. You need to be my age to appreciate them.
