It's the CRB which is funny about women's surnames, they phoned me to verify that I had recorded my surname correctly on the form - not for scouts, for another organisation. I was really annoyed with them. They are the only people who have ever assumed I don't know my own surname properly.

Doodle2U · 22/05/2008 12:52

Nope - the POR rule is that a permission slip is to be obtained. The rule does not say that parents on family camp must be CRB checked. The guide line fact sheet says they MUST - but that is a guideline NOT POR.

DirtySexyMummy · 22/05/2008 13:08

You are annoyed that you have to write a letter, which will take you all of 2 minutes to go and help out with children?

Oh right, well if this is an inconvenience then why don't we scrap it all. Make it much easier, wouldn't want you to have to go to any trouble to ensure childrens safety now would we.

Lets hope none of those pesky paedophiles attempt to go off on these camps though, eh?

Sorry but this has really annoyed me. Disclosures and CRB are done for a reason, a really bloody good reason as well. It would be possible for you to use your married name, but you don't. You could have been convicted before on that name. You don't think thats worth being checked?

cornsilk · 22/05/2008 14:19

DSM - you are having a go at people who are prepared to give up their time to help out with children - that's why they are having CRB's in the first place.

Hey doodle - I saw an advertisement about our old school They're asking for people's memories 'cos it's their anniversary. (50, 100 years? Didn't check that bit) Why don't you supply them with your memories from under the mobiles with a packet of fags?

rbs · 22/05/2008 18:57

Doodle POR only covers rules that are specific to the Scout Ass and does not cover things that are in civil law.

If you look at the rules in POR on adult recruitment they do not actually mention a CRB/DS as part of the process. Though if you go and look through the guidelines in the factsheets etc they will mention it. This however dose not mean that you don't need to do it because it's not in POR! I know the laws differ between England and Scotland but here it is a legal requirment that you have been disclosed.

Also the guidelines are there for a reason - if you follow them go to camp and something does happen then the Scout Association will back you up. But if like in your case you do not follow them and something had happened it would be YOU or whoever was in charge on your own and not covered by the Scouts

This reminds me of the time the CRB got into a bit of bother when some numpty decided anyone using 'Ms' must be an evil transgressive divorcee and started mucking about demanding women declare their previous names.

Why do you need to confirm you are married? You have given them a bloody marriage certificate, surely that's enough proof! And why do you need to explain that you didn't change your name? Plenty of people don't - CRB just needs to check both names. That's their job.

TinkerbellesMum · 22/05/2008 19:30

DSM it's not CRB that want the letter it's the scouts. When I didmine a few weeks ago my trainerr went above and beyond what was asked to minimise returns, I suspect thats what the scouts are doing.

Doodle2U · 22/05/2008 19:46

RBS, a group of people going camping are not required, as far as I know, in civil law or otherwise, to obtain CRB checks before they go.

POR covers the absolute bottom line for scouting. If it's written in POR, then it happens. POR stops short of requiring CRB checks for family camp.

I've emailed Gilwell again today to get their absolute definitive answer on this.

The OP does not have to be CRB checked to go on this camp. She is going as a parent.

If every main scouting event, where parents, family & friends are invited, required CRB checks on all adults - most events would cease because it isn't feasible.

Doodle2U · 22/05/2008 19:51

Cornsilk - I'm pretty certain my recollections won't be required, on the grounds that they don't show the school up too well. I can't imagine tabbing it under the prefabs, hiding all the porn we could find in the library and setting fire to Anna Marie Q's hair with a bunsen burner are going to find much favour with the powers that be. Neither will putting black spots on Mrs Black's back after we did Treasure Island, using the spare PE Kit t.shirts to wipe round the rim of the changing room bogs and then slinging them back in the spares box or nipping down to the basement cloak rooms and snipping off the parker hood fur trim on any coats we could find!

Are you going to offer any of yours?

Doodle2U · 22/05/2008 19:54

Oh yes - and that memorable day when I sent Mandy Metcalf's Victoria sandwich cake flying out of the window of the DS lab, only for it to splatter at the feet of Miss Greenhalgh or the other DS incident when I fished out a load of guff from the sink plug hole and casually threw it out the window where it landed nicely on Mdm Hutchins's head. Man, she was mad as hell that day!

rbs · 22/05/2008 20:22

POR stops short of requiring CRB checks for anything.

Most Scouting events where family/friends are invited are not overnight and have much less chance of a non-Scouting adult being in a position where they may be left with a group of children.

I have also checked my facts both in the past when planning camps and other activities and today before commenting. This afternoon I even brought this up with my area regional secretary who confirm this. And he is someone who has worked fulltime in that position for many many years and could probably quote POR word for word in fact some parts he helped write. Yeah sure at times he can be a complete arse but he knows his stuff.
