To think that a private dental practice will do a better job?

DH is getting some private dental treatment (whitening and two crowns). AIBU to think he might get a better result at a private dental clinic as opposed to paying for private treatment from his NHS dentist? Private dentist seem to have some equipment that the NHS doesn’t, for example.

All dentists have the same training.

All dentists are private dentists when they're seeing a private patient.

The main difference will be
time, much more time is spent on private treatment

materials , if you are having private crowns done a much greater choice of materials is available , a wider choice of colours and shapes , the laboratory work will be of a much higher standard and the aesthetics (looks) of the crowns should be much better .

All dentists are initially trained the same but NHS work does not allow you the time and resources to carry out the work you were trained to do and doesn’t allow you the income to afford advanced further training and equipment . However the vast majority of practices these days carry out NHS and private work as NHS fees are not enough to keep the lights on .

It wholly depends on the quality of the dentistry and the quality of the work the laboratory do.There will be some great dentists who are NHS and do private work, there will be some terrible private dentists. 🤷‍♀️

No, no real difference. They will likely have longer for the appointment, and maybe use a different lab for private work.
Neither of those procedures are “specialist” so having them done at a mixed practice compared to a fully private won’t matter, the lab is probably the main thing.

I am going to a private dentist for work my NHS could be doing (for much less money). But I want to go with private as the dentist has considerably more experience -equating to be being better- having attended two appointments, I am really pleased with my teeth. I have spent a small fortune (still more to go) but I can always earn more money but if my teeth are not corrected to the best standard, I cannot get them back.

An NHS dentist fitted a crown for me around 1996 when I fell over and smashed one of my front teeth.

It’s still going strong and you couldn’t tell it’s there by looking.

I had a tooth that had ben patched for years very very painfully as 3 different NHS dentists couldn't numb it.
The final time it cracked I saw a Private dentist who suggested taking it out, I explained it wasn't possible to numb it and he said if he could would I let him take it out?
He did so I did and he has done an awesome job of looking after me, DH and DD ever since.
He also did a great job on a tooth of DH's an NHS Dentist broke trying to take it out. DH was waiting for an appointment to get it out under GA

Due to complications I will probably be heading back to the private dental practice to have a crown fitted , cost will be about £1500 , so do keep that in mind as well . I’m sure other private clinics will have varying prices , but far more than my NHS dentist doing the work privately.

I’m going to a “mixed” practice as private patient - it’s got by far the best reputation in the area and the dentists are all amazing. Downside is they tend to leave to join a fully private practice after a while. Otherwise I’m sure I’m getting the same treatment as I would in a fully private surgery.

Thank you for all the helpful responses! He’s decided to go with the mixed practice.

I've had both NHS and private treatment, I'd always go private if able to, I find the general care so much better, I don't feel rushed in and out of the chair and am happier with the results
