To ask how I can get a newspaper delivered to a hospital ward?

Mum is in hospital (Royal London) and absolutely bored out of her mind. I tried Deliveroo to get a newspaper and some treats delivered, but they took the money but didn't deliver the order. Tesco (Whoosh) also won't deliver to a hospital.

Any ideas, folks? Mum very ill and struggling without her daily newspaper.

Thanks.

Ask the ward. They quite often have a trolley.
Or ring the shop in the hospital?

Is there a ‘Friends of…’ shop at the Royal London? I can’t remember, 23 years since I had DD there. Hope your mum is ok ❤️

Can you (or she, I don't know how ill or able she is) find contact details for the hospital shop? Is she on a ward? Can she ask one of the other patients visitors to nip to the shop for her (I would absolutely do this if asked)

My mum was in Royal Free and the Friends' Shop delivered. We made them a donation as well as it was so important!

That says Royal Free. Is she in Royal Free or Royal London? If the latter just realised their website doesn’t have contact details. But the shop is at the Stepney Way entrance. Can she ask a staff member how to contact the shop if she is unable to ambulate?

I’m assuming that she doesn’t have a smartphone?

She does, but doesn't really know how to use it. I do all her ordering for her.

PS: I would love to think that you really are Dame Katy Denise - I miss her!

Of course it’s me 😉.
Would she ask someone there to help her navigate an online newspaper? The Times subscription is free for a period of time I think, before it starts charging. Or there’s always The Grauniad - free.
I’ve just found a similar thread from last year btw - a staff member came in to say Deliveroo can only be left at the front desk - so maybe they did deliver and it’s still there?

It shows their email and switchboard would have their extension

If no luck phone pals

ComtesseDeSpair · 01/06/2025 14:14

If you don’t find any other options, I work just around the corner and would be more than happy to drop in with newspapers and a couple of books and snacks a couple of days this week - the hospital should allow non-Deliveroo deliveries to be dropped off at the door of the ward for ward staff to pass on. Feel free to PM me.

You can contact The Friends (who run the Trolley Shop) on [email protected]

amooseymoomum · 01/06/2025 15:10

most hospitals have a hospital trolley selling squash sweets papers etc.
Also some hospitals have volunteers bringing books around to lend to patients; i did that for quite a while and it was really interesting meeting all the patients.
