To ask if anyone’s had a mental health admission to a crisis house, instead of hospital?

Sorry to post in Aibu, hoping for traffic-
just the above really I’ve been offered a stay at a crisis house by the mental health home treatment team. I’m not coping at all at home but I’m wondering if I should go. I would be leaving Dh and Dd and it’s 40 minutes away from home so they wouldn’t visit much
thanks in advance

I haven't but it sounds like you need help and a specialised house actually sounds like a nicer, more comfortable place to get it than a hospital.

I hope things change for you positively soon.

Why would your husband and daughter not be able to visit, its 40 minutes, surely that is manageable?
Will you get treatment in this house? Will the staff be trained to look after you?

After work and school it’ll be 530 by the time they leave. 6.15 by the time they get here and parked, that would be bang on dinner - so realistically he’d need to feed her so it would be 6-630 by the time they could leave, and then 7.15 on arrival which is b/ath and bedtime. It just isn’t feasible to visit in the week

They can cone in the weekend.

Go. Get treatment. Get better and soon you are at home with your family.

Yes, I stayed in a crisis house. It was mixed sex, we all had our own bedroom with bathroom and each floor had a kitchen.

There were several staff on 24/7. I was visited by a member of the crisis team who checked how I was and saw a (very sarcastic) therapist once who was asking what my plans were when I left.

You could stay in your room or mix with other residents. There was a communal TV room. Your medication is locked up and given to you according to your prescription.

If you need a break then go. It's not the Ritz but it's a breathing space.

Yes it is, your daughter can have some snacks in the car, one late night won't hurt - especially on a Friday - it is 40 minutes - most people commute longer than that for work

Hello @Namesame Yes, it’s a better place to get some breathing space rather than a hospital. My cousin has recently stayed within a crisis house facility and there was A LOT of improvement in him within 2 weeks.
He had his own bedroom, bathroom, could have cups of tea, juice etc and sit in the garden, and had staff available 24/7.
There were therapists who worked alongside him with a “toolkit” of sorts to help him once he felt able to face the world again.
Things like how to name 5 things that you see, hear, smell etc to ground you.
Smells that calm you , such as essential oils (mandarin or bergamot perhaps) and they also want to make sure you have a little support network of sorts too. I recommend this type of care and was impressed how things turned around for my cousin. Hope you feel lighter and more human soon. 💐

Yes I have & it's a big improvement on an inpatient admission - I have schizoaffective/bipolar.

Inpatient wards can be chaotic with very unwell & disruptive patients. Crisis houses can be better.

Ours is 6 bedded so small & so quieter.

Staff are hit & miss & are not qualified nurses but often agency 'carers'.

If you need a break from home then it's a good option but if you have a supportive family then you might be better off at home with HTT support.

I use it when I know DH needs a break too.

One thing to be careful of is to ask if it's single sex or mixed. I felt very uncomfortable on a mixed sex crisis house at night - although bedrooms are separate they cannot be locked, bathrooms were shared & there's only 1 member of staff there at night.
