Denim jackets and white trainers

Just went to a comedy show tonight. I have been living under a rock and haven't really been out for a loooonng time, I obviously haven't been paying attention when I have been out previously.

I was so surprised to see several woman in their 70's 80's ( very generic comedian) wearing demin jackets, wide leg trousers and white trainers. This is a look I would have associated with a much younger age bracket. I thought they all looked great and very trendy. As a woman in my early 40's and in a mid life crisis when it comes to fashion as I've grown too old to wear what I have always worn ( short pleated skirts) , I would have comfortably worn a denim jacket and wide leg trousers, Now I feel all it's going to do is age me.

AIBU to even care about this in my forties or should I be paying more attention if I don't want to look like I'm dressing like my mother.

I am right there with you. This was my go to, I’m mid thirties and would often wear a midi skirt denim jacket and trainers. It’s been adopted by pensioners now so I would never wear it! I still think it’s a great look and they all look fab 😂

Soukmyfalafel · 30/05/2025 23:21

I think bootcut jeans are coming back in too, which I found my mum didn't stop wearing and she is 70 now. I just think fashion goes around in circles and if you stick with it you will likely be in fashion again 25 years later.

They probably didn't stop wearing it, you're just noticing it now as it's what you feel comfortable wearing too.

Ponoka7 · 30/05/2025 23:25

I'm not really understanding tbh. I see all ages wearing wide leg trousers during warm weather, going back decades. Denim jackets have always been a go to, admittedly older women used to wear the pastel shades. Other coloured trainers are available.

No, it’s a very specific look. Denim, white trainers and loose wide leg pants or a midi skirt.
Its a phenomenon that people have started making tiktoks about 😂

2ndbestslayer · 30/05/2025 23:30

You could just accept that these days there isn't really a pensioners uniform in the same way there used to be. The idea of mutton dressed as lamb and certain things only being acceptable when worn by certain age groups is well and truly out of fashion.

So honestly, it seems really fucked up to me that simply because someone older than you wore it you now won't?!

This must have passed me by….i can’t picture it. Don’t think I’ve noticed people wearing it.

can you post a picture?

edited to add: I have a lovely denim jacket. But I never wear it Because I don’t know what to wear with it. I often wear jeans and wouldn’t do double denim, and when not wearing jeans I would wear leggings, which would just look dreadful.

My go to would be a 90s style kind of maxi skirt, but I’m too fat for them now and they don’t look good Sad

so I’m liking the idea of wide leg trousers.

Although I did have a pair once but I kept getting my foot caught in the wide leg of the other leg and had a few near misses of what would have been disastrous falls!

How is it ageism?
A PP posted that she wouldn’t do double denim…this is becoming popular among older teens/early 20s, I wouldn’t wear it because in my mid 30s I don’t think I’d pull it off. It works both ways!
Some people are so bloody over sensitive 🙄

What about a midi or maxi loose summer dress? Floral print maybe? I always think this looks nice with a denim and trainers 😊 and is really flattering

ThatsNotMyTeen · 30/05/2025 23:53

I was wearing that combo tonight, I’m 52 😆

I don’t think it’d be ageing but instead shows older women now still like to style themselves in a more fashionable way than our granny’s generation.

LoztWorld · 30/05/2025 23:58

Why are you too old for short pleated mini skirts in your early forties? I don’t agree with that at all. I don’t think early forties is too old for anything, fashion-wise.

Enough4me · 30/05/2025 23:59

I'm late 40s usually told I look early 40s I'd wear it. Skinny and ripped jeans are out (thankfully as wide more forgiving). Denim jackets come in a range of colours and have useful pockets and great with spring dresses. I'm not keen on the boxy style ones though, but the ones with a bit of shaping are flattering.

krustykittens · 31/05/2025 00:05

Wear the short skirts while you still can, OP. I am 52 and nervously keeping an eye on my knees and wondering how much longer I can get them out in the summer.

outerspacepotato · 31/05/2025 00:11

That might be their denim jacket from when they were younger.

I have my old Levis jacket from the last century and still wear it. It has history and patina. I gave my eldest my old Levi bell bottoms from high school pre Kendrick making them popular again. I've pulled out a couple of my 90s long dresses. I wear my mom's denim blazer and my brother's denim shirt.

Wear what you love. Now it's called dopamine dressing.

outoftouch123 · 31/05/2025 00:16

wow I didn't realise I came across as ageist, I'm very sorry. As I said I thought these woman looked great.

I've been wearing short pleated skirts since I was in my late teens. I'm not really one to follow fashion , this has always been my look, what I feel more comfortable in and what I feel is more flattering for my shape. However, my body shape is changing and I'm becoming very aware of my knees looking, shall we say less youthful. I feel short skirts don't suit me anymore.

As for the woman aged 52, I'm sure you look great. Some woman can just pull it off, I just feel I've lost that flare.

I wore a lot of short skirts, I was only thinking, today, how great my legs were. I used to go bare-legged, with high heels. I’m just glad I had it, when I had it. Time to move on!

But, it is very hard to find a new signature style, when you’re 50-ish. Your body changes. Your face is not the same, or your knees! It’s actually exciting, though, developing a new look!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 31/05/2025 00:39

I can picture what you’re talking about. I still think it looks nice even though a. I don’t have a denim jacket and b. Older people are wearing it.

I like wide leg trousers but I have to be a bit careful with them as I don’t have long legs. I do still wear white trainers but not only (edit - I mean not every day).

I think we have to all just wear what we want to wear and not worry whether it’s fashionable or puts us into an age group.

outerspacepotato · 31/05/2025 00:53

"However, my body shape is changing and I'm becoming very aware of my knees looking, shall we say less youthful. I feel short skirts don't suit me anymore."

What about a gathered skirt with a definite waistband in a fabric like linen? You get close to the silhouette you like but a bit longer.

Bonkersdogmum · 31/05/2025 01:06

OP what about long satin skirts? They are all bias cut now so a bit more form fitting - but can easily be dressed up or down with various different styles of tops/shoes/trainers

Can I ask what it is about your knees that bothers you? I hear women around your age say this a lot but I can’t say I’ve ever noticed anything different about their knees.

Don’t worry OP you’re in that difficult phase of life where you still give a shit. Give it five years and you won’t care what anyone thinks about your knees.
