If you go on luxury holidays often?

Nevaenuf · 30/05/2025 19:37

If you do, Disney Florida, luxury destinations every year? How large is your family? How much do you earn? How much is your disposable income? And how much do you spend?

im in a few Walt Disney world groups and the amount of people that go every year is quite significant and stay deluxe and I’ve always wondered how people afford it’s out of reach for us but our income according to that national statistics thing is the top 20%.

so asking the totally nosey question that people probably wouldn’t want to answer unless they could anonymously

Do you feel better for dripping that much condescension before 10am?

Do you feel better for writing such a rude comment and unable to accept that some people find these things funny? Get a grip.

You are being silly.

We are lucky enough to have traveled to almost every corner of the world with our now adult kids. Stayed at beautiful luxury hotels, and because of dh’s job also usually upgraded to first class and the nicest lounges at the hotels with amazing food and drinks.
There are many ”luxury” hotels that wouldn’t feel like luxury to us.

We have also been lucky enough to go to Orlando many times. Not stayed on site because we don’t want to. Every time has been absolutely magical. We have memories for life, and no regrets. Such gold times.

To say that those memories and travels are not luxury just shows how ignorant you are.

Nope not ignorant at all but thanks for not seeing the humour.

Like you I have been to all those places and more and Disney certainly isn’t luxury. It is a lot of things - good and bad but not luxurious.

Wow seems a few are tetchy this morning when you dare say something bad about Disney.

I have no idea what you’re trying to get at.

why don’t you just say what you want to say and stop with the stupid winking 🤷‍♀️

So rude.

i thought it fairly apparent, but being a high earner or earning well is very subjective some would consider a household income of my level to be high earners, others 200k others 500k +

Summerisere · 01/06/2025 08:28

My DH and I retired mid/early 50’s and spend half of our 80k pensions on holidays (we have other investments too).
Before this our joint income was 190k, we have 3 DC and spent 20-30k on holidays.
Our DC are grown up now and we’ve taken them on at least one ‘big’ holiday each year to somewhere like South Africa, Caribbean, South America and multiple smaller ones (Med, city breaks, center Parcs etc). We have taken our DC to 46 countries.
Travelling is our thing.

namechangeGOT · 01/06/2025 08:34

We do 3/4 ‘luxury’ (by the definition you give) holidays a year. We do Florida (not Disney as we don’t like Disney!) every two years.

We live in South Yorkshire, no mortgage, no other debt, 100k between us and 1 child.

No you’re rude. And passive aggressive to boot.

You’ve twice called me out with stupid winks because what? I didn’t answer your post to your satisfaction?

Emskies · 01/06/2025 10:38

We earn £250k combined and have 6 month old. We usually go on about 3-4 holidays a year to Europe and go home to New Zealand every few years. Spend a reasonable amount but rather have a few holidays, do one expensively in 5 star accom and the others chill in Airbnb’s etc

I agree that your winking looks rude. You probably don’t mean it to. Some posters have given you long thoughtful replies, and you just answer with a couple of words and a wink.

Labiabella · 01/06/2025 10:51

Perhaps the word 'expensive' is a better word than 'luxury'. Everybody's definition of luxury is so different.

Then again I guess it's the same with 'expensive'

intention was definitely not to be rude more playful in tone but appreciate tone is difficult to convey via message

i also didn’t call you out… I replied to your post because the lifestyle you detailed sounded idillic so when you said you ‘earned well’ I asked what you meant by that because people mean different things by it

And also further to this I’d say I’m really curious about really successful people and how they get there and what their lives are like (for instance the holidays) as I’m envious, not in the sense that I resent you your successes or wish you didn’t have them in fact I’m glad you do, but what can I do to get there, if it’s even possible given my life path thus far an my age. By contrast I feel I’m rather mediocre

We earn over 100k and are lucky to have a very small mortgage

we’re just back from a £5k week in the med (fairly posh hotel by our standards) - had to pay the premium to go at half term but I think it’s an obscene amount of money to spend on a (fairly “routine” package)holiday and I am surprised how families with normal incomes afford a relatively straightforward week, let alone fortnights in Florida

Fair enough Smile

it’s difficult answering questions like this because I appreciate there are an awful lot of people struggling to make ends meet let alone taking multiple holidays of any type and I’m kind of at the point where disposable income makes little difference: I spend enough to get us the experience we enjoy but actually its not wall to wall luxury.

which was the point I was trying to convey with my first post.

for example our recent NYC holiday the rough break down was:

flights - 18k
activities 6k
eating out 6k
hotel 12k

We stayed in a Marriott, I would not dream of spending the money to stay in The Carlyle or the St Regis, although I’ve stayed in both those chains when in cities that are cheaper. It definitely wasn’t luxury, but overall it was expensive and an amazing experience.

whilst perhaps not wall to wall luxury my most standards that sounds pretty luxurious (as does the price tag)

I guess if disposable income of little significance then you’re level of wealth is probably out of reach for corporate schmucks like me

Household income of around £180k (can be up to £200k as some is via bonuses). We have a large mortgage as only just bought our long term home and trying to overpay it asap so 30% of monthly takehome goes on mortgage. 1 car payment £400 per month. 2 incomes, no kids and no plans to have any. Have approximately £1500 per month disposable per month and £30k in bonuses once per year that we consider truly disposable so split between savings, home improvements and travel.

Last year we spent nearly £15k on travel but got a huge amount of trips from it.
Eurostar to Brussels for long weekend.
Long weekend in Stockholm (to see Taylor Swift)
Long weekend in Edinburgh (to see Taylor again)
Week in Paris to see the Olympics.
Week in Scotland visiting family and attending wedding.
Week in Chicago for the marathon, inc business class flights.
3 week cruise around SE Asia, economy flights.

Most accommodation around 4 star standard but as you can see, a lot of our trips were during “peak” occasions. Think the most we’ve spent per night was the air BnB in Edinburgh which was fairly basic but during the tour, you could barely get anything!

This year DH needed a new car and we have some more home improvements to pay for so trying to spend much less on travel.

1 week in Seville in Feb so off peak. £2k inc spending money.
2.5 weeks in Thailand later in the year. Less the £5k and we’re staying in some FANCY hotels. Flights currently economy but we’re considering upgrading as the home improvements look to be paid off a little earlier than we think.
Also considering a spa weekend somewhere in the UK and a long weekend at a festival but nothing booked yet.

Not me, but my brother and sister in law do, and comfortably so. They earn combined £300k. Family of four.

We could afford it but choose to spend elsewhere (higher mortgage, old house renovations and expenditures, and nanny) which means we can’t afford it with those costs. We’re £188k, family of four.

I have a tent… it’s luxury to me! Sorry to brag about this on mumsnet.

MN is like peering into another world sometimes. Makes me feel completely inadequate Sad

Anyone could write anything, maybe it’s true, maybe it isn’t. Don’t compare yourself to unproven statements on the Internet, you’re not inadequate.

Well some of the deluxe resorts would definitely fit that description they are objectively very nice

I’ve stayed in them all and honestly they’re not. The service is shockingly poor. Idiots like me who love Disney still keep booking them though….

I have stayed at Grand Floridian (many times), Yacht and Beach Club (3 times), Polynesian (once). Eaten at Wilderness Lodge a few times. We are trying AKL this summer. As an example, if it stops you wishing you could afford it, once at Y&B (having paid circa £600 a night) we were being disturbed by construction noise (not made aware prior to booking) at 5/6am a couple of days right by our window, and a room service tray was left in the corridor where we were for FOUR DAYS - until I eventually had enough and took it to reception myself (it wasn’t ours!). Grand - no hot water and unable to shower one day during one stay. They’re just the things that really stick in my mind. Honestly, nowhere near 5 star resorts and the prices have gone up and up.

Port Orleans is lovely! I stayed there lots as a child.

I’m actually considering a few days at Pop or similar this year as I love Disney but I am so tired of being frustrated at the service and standards for the prices of the deluxe resorts.

90k, probably spend about 5/6 k for a family of 4 per year. That’s a 2 week summer holiday with the car and maybe flying somewhere for a few days at another point in the year. Always in school holidays.

cupfinalchaos · 04/06/2025 19:09

Yes we do. Dh earns in top 0.1% and this year we’ve done a month in South Africa with stays at 4k per night safaris, and taken our 6 combined adult kids and their partners to a ski chalet. We’ll have 2 or 3 more probably this year. I actually don’t know what our disposable income is as dh’s salery varies, he doesn’t earn a fixed amount.
