Roald Dahl version of red riding hood and three little pigs…

Conversation with new friend yesterday and she noted the books in my dining room, when I saw the well used RD book, I commented about the fantastic version of little red riding hood etc, she hadn’t heard of it so when I recited some from memory to see if it jogged her memory, she looked at me horrified that I would read this book to my children. My son was about 4/5 and tbh I probably wouldn’t read it to my daughter yet (she’s 4 and more sensitive than her brother was at the same age).

So aibu - version completely inappropriate for young kids
ainbu - it’s a great version which most kids (and adults) love!

It's recommended for six up. Totally up to you, but children get more out of RD a little older. My granddaughter started reading them independently around eight. Did your son get the humour?

Loved it as a kid and all my children have taken great delight at 'The small girl smiles. One eyelid flickers. She whips a pistol from her knickers' bit.

@CrackingOn50 never was there a better line in a children’s book ❤️

Personally, I am very ambivalent about Roald Dahl. Both him personally and some of his books.

I don't think any children should be exposed to the misogyny of Dahl.

I couldn't remember what Dahl's version was until I saw this!

It's pretty tame for about 6 plus!

We love this version! I remember reading it when I was about 8? But my year 1 child thinks it’s hilarious.

We have this book and I loved it as a child, but I haven't read it to DC because they don't actually know the fairytales it's based on so it didn't make sense.

Not sure why we ended up never reading any fairytales, we read plenty of other books.
