To think this is quite a low bridge

Unlikely to cause any injuries if you do fall. As people have been moaning about people sitting on it saying it’s dangerous.

If people sit on it and fall of then that's their problem.

Does it go over a railway? You cannot stop everyone being stupid forever. That is not a new bridge, why should it be retrospectively fitted with unsightly fencing or built higher to protect people from their own stupidity?

toomuchfaff · 30/05/2025 17:08

personal responsibility

TheNightingalesStarling · 30/05/2025 17:14

Next to a road over a railway i sa bloody stupid place to sit. An accident could traumatise an innocent vehicle or train driver

KrisAkabusi · 30/05/2025 17:29

You're half right. If you fall forwards you'll probably be fine, but if you fall backwards you're fucked.

RubyBalonz · 30/05/2025 19:01

Trains can usually be stopped pretty easily plus the actual fall obviously isn’t thag much so would have thought the person could get them to safety

Trains absolutely can't stop easily, their braking distance is huge, they can't do an emergency stop like a car.

Of course it is dangerous. You fall onto a road potentially into traffic or even worse you fall onto a railway track potentially under a train. And you're bonkers at best or sick at worst if you think a train can be easily stopped. The trauma of a train accident for the driver cannot be understated .

What?! It is incredibly dangerous (and indeed a criminal offence) for any unauthorised person to be on the railway line at any point. If someone falls and is injured and can’t get off by themselves, they, whoever has to get them to safety, the train driver and everyone on the train are at serious risk.

Tagyoureit · 30/05/2025 19:10

I'd feel more sorry for the train driver seeing a person on the track knowing they can't stop the train in time than I would for the twat who was sitting on that bridge.

Why are people so thick that they think sitting on that wall is a good idea? Or piss about with level crossings?

Before or after they get fried on the third rail?

Unless, of course, underneath has been specially adapted to match your accommodation needs...

TheNightingalesStarling · 30/05/2025 19:20

Do you know the stopping distance for a train? Even during the reaction time they travel quite the distance.

Did you see in the news about the train that hit the tractor trailer? A lot easier to see than a person

I'm now convinced you're on some sort of windup. The photo clearly shows at least a 10m drop, and your claim about trains above is just nonsense.

WinSomeandLoseSome · 30/05/2025 19:30

What a weird post. Of course falling would cause an injury.

Well, they didn't seem to get much traction when they posted it on Reddit earlier in the week.

Sitting on the wall? It doesn't look comfy, and falling onto a railway line would not be good news!

maggiecate · 30/05/2025 22:20

Network Rail are extremely risk averse so if there’s an issue with people sitting on it they’ll likely take remediation steps.

Any fall onto concrete/road etc can be dangerous, even if they don’t go over the other side, and a fall from a bridge high enough for a train to pass under is unlikely to end well. Added to which it looks pretty uncomfortable.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 31/05/2025 07:39

What a totally idiotic post!

RitaAndFrank · 31/05/2025 07:42

Why don’t you test it to find out, op?

Oh OK, perhaps not then…

They really can't be stopped easily. Do you know how much weight a freight train pulls for example?

This!

Latenightreader · 31/05/2025 07:49

Ridiculous post. Someone falling off the wall could easily hit their head, be injured, lose consciousness and if lying flat could be very hard to see, especially if the bridge causes a shadow or it is dark. I know drivers/guards who have been on trains that have hit a person and the trauma is long lasting.

This has got to be a wind up, surely no one can be this clueless?

Koalafan · 31/05/2025 07:50

I'd be worried more about people intentionally jumping down tbh.
What sort of idiot sits on top of a bridge for fun?

taxguru · 31/05/2025 07:51

It's idiotic comments like that which is why Network Rail raise the sides of so many such bridges - the stop the brain dead from sitting or leaning over the edge and falling onto the tracks. It's actually pretty rare to find bridges with such low sides these days. As for thinking trains can quickly/easier be stopped - the mind boggles!

user1476613140 · 31/05/2025 07:51

Strange post...

Golidlocksandthethreeswears · 31/05/2025 07:53

A normal diesel train travelling at speed takes over half a mile to stop after the emergency brake is applied.
