So far I’ve watched
Playing it Straight (the homophobia is rife!)
Fat Families (just horrific, ‘lard busting’ and shaming overweight kids)
Big Fat Gypsy Weddings (did the producers never want to intervene with what is essentially child abuse?)

I saw that ch5 is bringing Faking it back it's on soon because the trailers have been running a week or so.

What I do like about watching old shows, and seeing pics of celebs from the red carpet in the late 90s and early 00s is how different every woman looked.

They all looked individual and had their own styles - when you look at pictures of celebs and people on shows like Love Island, Love is Blind, Too Hot to Handle etc, they all look exactly the same. Whether it's the contour make up, the extensions, the styling - whatever it is, it's very difficult to tell people apart anymore.

I liked Faking It.

There was a good one too where they put a load of kids through a replica 1950s grammar school, and the next year through a 1960s secondary modern. They got to do dress making, brick laying and car mechanics!

I like the one where people lived as if they were in a Victorian / 1940s etc house.

Even the first series of Big Brother was interesting. I liked early seasons of The Apprentice too. I think all reality shows decline after one or two seasons.

I found Gok OK. At least he tried to improve the woman's self esteem and didn't push plastic surgery.

How about that one where they put ladettes through finishing school?!

Edited

There were a good few of these types of shows - there was one where they put families in a house and went through the decades with a focus on food or technology etc. Going back in time for Dinner or something like that? I really enjoyed them.

I remember there was one episode where they hit the 1960s and the 15 year old daughter moved out into a bedsit and got a job in a clothes shop, blew my mind!

Coffeeishot · 30/05/2025 09:57

Oh I see someone else has posted about the new faking it.

Hollieandtheivie · 30/05/2025 09:57

I used to love Snog, Marry, Avoid but wouldn't watch it now with how times have moved on.

Yes those were good on Bbc2 ? My mum left school at 15 and was working full time.

Seeing a PP mentioned X Factor reminds me there was an expose of it a few years ago which revealed that vulnerable and possibly mentally unwell people who were terrible at singing would audition for a producer, who'd send them onto a second group of producers, who'd all tell them how great they were and really build them up.

Then they'd go out in front of the judges with all this misplaced confidence and get torn to shreds.

So cruel and circus like. Glad it's not on anymore.

Mumdiva99 · 30/05/2025 09:59

I started rewatching Georgie Shore from the beginning. Firstly I realised there is no way I could watch this in front of my teenagers.....way too explicit.
Secondly I can't believe there were 18 year olds on the show. I don't think that would be allowed these days. Essentially kids being exploited for TV. I saw a couple of the OG's got married recently and that's what took me down the rabbit hole.....that and the fact Charlotte is now the boss of the Oz version.

Reality shows from 2025 are pretty shocking. The genre is basically a modern form of a voyeuristic freak show. Never a comfortable watch.

I was going to say. The stuff that’s reported from 2025 is publicly losing your virginity infront of cameras, getting your dick out for a dating showing, having orgies infront of the camera. What the hell?!!! It’s bizarre. I’d rather watch a fat person get weighed that look at a wrinkly, flaccid cock whilst eating dinner.

Never heard of two of these

I love a noughties reality show! Fat families was brilliant...but its shocking watching it back!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/05/2025 10:01

HiGunny · 30/05/2025 09:48

I remember this exact episode @Puzzledandpissedoff It was really interesting to see what goes into being a dj - it's not just pressing buttons, she needed to have a really good sense of rhythm, tempo etc.

Wonderful wasn't it, HiGunny ... I got quite tearful over that one Smile

There was the one about people who wore extreme makeup/fake tan getting a make under, I think it might have been presented by someone from atomic kitten.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 30/05/2025 10:02

I found the first Big Brother interesting - because it was meant to be a social experiment.
Don't watch reality tv these days and would not let my kids watch it... something very cruel and dirty about it.

They loved a leather biker jacket and one of those knitted hats worn far back on the head.

I was thinking about The Swan just the other day - the US one where they gave middle-aged women a complete plastic surgery makeover. Just dreadful - there were a couple of times where their small children were visibly distressed because they didn't recognise their mum after the big reveal.

Most of them weren't even that old! I follow an Instagram account which does quick summaries of these types of programmes and most of them were late 20s - mid 30s!! That's really sad about the kids 😢

Oh I loved back in time for dinner and really liked the family that was participating.

They did a Christmas one too which was really interesting even though it was obviously filmed in about August .

blacksantanapkin · 30/05/2025 10:03

Does anyone remember the obsession with outfits that ‘take you from DAY TO NIGHT’

They would have somebody stood there in office job attire then swap their handbag for a clutch and put some sparkly earrings on. This was supposed to demonstrate they could then go out and eat/drink/party.

I was early teens around this time and used to think adults genuinely did this and how cool and sophisticated it was. Now as an actual adult I have never looked for a day-to-night outfit 🤣

Oh I'm thinking that was in the early bbc3 days and yes an atomic kitten presented.

There was a particularly awful episode of wife swap where a toddler was being severely neglected by her parents, that was an awful watch.

I still think about the one where they put a crawling baby in a leopardskin swimming costume and the Dad said lightheartedly: " Oh, she looks like a little Tart" It's stuck with me all these years. The Dad was loathsome.

Snog marry avoid! 😂 It was supposed to be forward-thinking and kind but was also actually quite mean.

BarchesterTowels · 30/05/2025 10:05

The Faking It reboot on Channel 5 is well worth watching because it's a reality format that is much more heartwarming than cruel. One of the newspaper reviews made the point that the original series was an outlier in the noughties reality TV boom, because it wasn't about humiliating the contestants but giving them a chance to learn a new skill and mix with people from a totally different background. And, mostly, they got a huge amount out of the experience.

The first one was brilliant. All the controversy over Nasty Nick, which essentially boiled down to the fact a man had smuggled a pencil in 🤣.

I found one and two genuinely fascinating viewing. But the fourth or fifth series the contestants were openly admitting they were going in to get a showmance and a magazine deal and I stopped watching as it was no longer interesting to me.
