To buy a new door by myself???

I need a new front door - not urgently but the gearing on the lock has been replaced once , I was told it won’t last forever and it’s now 3 years hence with the lock getting clunky again so I’m starting to look around for a composite one.

A home improvements company knock on the door, I accept an offer of a quote just to see how much it would be. I tell them 4 pm is fine.

Their office call me straight back, I tell the chap on the phone that 4 is suitable. He asks if my husband will be there at that time.

I tell him no, he’ll still be at work but I will be here. He then offers me availability until 8. I tell him that 4 is the best time for me.

He then tells me they work until 4 on a Saturday if that’s better. I tell him no, 4.00 today is fine.

He then tells me that they ‘prefer to see both husband and wife together’ then tells me they cannot help any further with the quote because of this.

Seriously?? This house is mine, I paid for the entire mortgage, own it outright and it’s only my name on the deeds.

Can I not get a QUOTE unaccompanied??? It’s 2025 not 1955 for gods sake….

I imagine their aim is to sell you a lot more than a front door and on credit secured against your home. This would be why they'd want you both their so anyone with a legal/financial interest in the home would be present to sign up.

what happens if you're single then?

Doesn't matter if you're single as they only need to get you to agree as the sole owner. An agreement from one joint owner is pointless, they need you both.

I was told it's so you can't claim you were coerced then pull out of payment.. Still bonkers...
I would review them honestly... And give someone else your cash..

What if you don't have a husband?

Lonelydave · 29/05/2025 17:09

Um they can take a long walk off a short pier, don't let it worry you and just buy a new door somewhere else!

CoastalCalm · 29/05/2025 17:10

had similar when looking for a new car - repeatedly speaking to my husband when not only was it not for him he couldn’t bloody drive !

I've had exactly the same crap from someone who offered me a quote for rendering my house. (Came to the door.) I told him that I own the house and that the deeds are in my name. He still insisted that he had to see my husband.

In the end, I gritted my teeth and told the young man (truthfully) that I'm a widow.

"Oh," quoth he, "It'll be 'Ms' then."

After he'd gone, I got a phone call to confirm that I'd agreed to see their rep at 7 that evening. I had made no such agreement - I had an exercise class on that night.

I complained about the lack of insensitivity of their young man plus the fact that he'd lied about the appointment. (I had agreed to a phone call. Nothing else.)

I'll not be using them.

Happened to me with a conservatory and solar panels same situation as you, told them both to do one !

It’s infuriating isn’t it? I used to buy houses and renovate them for a living. One of my trades recommended a kitchen company so I arranged for them to come and quote. He came out to scope it but refused to give me a quote without speaking to my DH. I explained that this was my actual business, I was managing the project, and it was absolutely nothing to do with my DH. He still kept insisting that I rang him in work. My head was nearly exploding at this point!

We’ve had loads of work done on our own home and DH usually deals with that. Funnily enough I’ve never once been asked for permission for him to agree to a quote. 🙄

Is your door wooden? Unless you really want to spend a lot of money on a new front door, surely the old lock can be removed with some sort of brass plate or whatever put over the hole and a new lock fitted?

I've had this scenario with a quote to change our porch roof and windows - the guy even looked shocked when I could explain the difference between oriel, bay, bow and boxed windows and even more shocked when I said I was interested in architecture - but STILL he refused to quote me "unless your husband is at home"

When his bosses rang to chase me up over the "quote appointment", I told them that seeing as I was the one ordering the work and paying for the work, I was going to go with a company who didn't insist on my husband being there - my husband trusts me.

Out of interest I wonder if a man has ever been told he cant have a quote unless his wife is there...I very much bloody doubt it 😂

No, but I do recall the time my late husband told some workmen: "Bad news lads - the wife's not happy!"

(They'd made a mess of building the steps up to a new porch and DH had to deal with it because I was at work.)

I understand that most people like to ask their partners so seeing both together is efficient.

Solidoor have nice doors.
