To be concerned

About large groups of foreign men in my city centre jeering and shouting at myself and preteen daughter as we sat in a park? Is this common in your area? We felt extremely intimidated.

The point of jeering men is usually to intimidate, so no, you gave the desired response.

YANBU to be concerned. You should report it to the police because at some point they will go further than just shouting at passers-by. Unfortunately the police won't do anything about this incident because it will be put down to "cultural differences" - we have to respect the right of people from other cultures behaving as they like, and if you think their rights should be limited you will be shouted down as racist.

Definitely not common in my area. I’m so sorry that happened to you both.

DoNoTakeNo · 29/05/2025 13:48

Not common in my area, currently, thank God. I have experienced this & as it was intimidating managed to avoid them. I also had the “momma bear” response ready, if they dared to come anywhere near my child.

Dontforgetthesalad · 29/05/2025 13:49

It was the sheer number of them that I couldn’t comprehend.

This is antisocial behaviour. Tell the police.
If it happens again call the police then and there.

It happens in our town too. My DD17 says she and her friends have been experiencing this a lot recently.

I don't like her going into town on her own anymore tbh. Last week I went shopping with her and the amount of young men leering at her was unnerving even when I glared at them they just carried on as though I wasn't there. I'm not sure if they'd have done the same if DH had been with us?

Dontforgetthesalad · 29/05/2025 14:09

I definitely wouldn’t let her go alone in the future. We hadn’t been for a long time and I’m really shocked at how much it had changed.
