Hi
I posted a while go about noise in my semi detached as the rooms bedrooms and living area all directly attached next to neighbour in there semi detached

where I live detached houses are around £70-110k more. I could buy maybe but expensive mortgage that would stretch finances

should i stretch myself or should I spend £££ to get professional level soundproofing put in my semi detached

I want a detached but would be a real stretch really hard

The UK house standards crap

What is the noise? Are we talking antisocial behaviour, or standard living next door to a family type noise?

Judging by all the recent garden-mania threads where people in detached houses still gripe about having to hear their neighbours playing, socialising, or simply just talking to each other in their gardens, if it’s going to be a financial stretch to buy a detached house then it’s probably also worth considering how noise-sensitive you are and whether you’d also be annoyed to have that.

@ComtesseDeSpair tbh I am very noise sensitive

At the moment its just normal family noise tv playing etc can be a bit loud in the day at times but quiet at night and they are a nice neighbour.

Just wish I didnt have to hear them at all

They own I just worry if they sell to someone who is loud then it could make it a nightmare to live in my house

If you're otherwise happy in your house and would like to stay there, get the soundproofing done. I know that noise sensitivity and am very, very lucky to have quiet neighbours and a staircase between our living areas.

morgan297 · 29/05/2025 10:57

Has anyone had soundproofing done did it work or did it not work

It’s a risk either way, to be honest. What is the likelihood of the neighbours moving? Is it a home they’re likely to stay in for some time? I’d stay close to nice neighbours if it were me.

I thought so but they said to me before planning to sell in a few years and move and cant remember why now

I like my house but its a lot of money to spend on soundproofing to as an expriement to find out if it will work or not

I've got similar issues to you except my neighbours are following the cry to sleep method. They're leaving the baby to scream for hours while having a drink in the garden. It's horrendous, cruel & awful for everyone especially the baby.

I'm getting soundproofing installed as I can also hear their dishwasher being loaded etc. They also row a lot and the couple are bloody moaners. Sound carries more in modern houses but I can only hear my left side neighbours and not those on my right.

I don't mind the dishwasher noises so much but the sound of their baby crying really upsets me. All she wants is a cuddle and I feel like going round to give her a hug. She's also very young for them to do this, 6 months old. They're not doing it right either, they just leave her and sit in the garden with a bottle of wine. Poor thing screams for a good hour or so before she falls asleep exhausted and it's really distressing for me to hear.

So that’s a bit difficult!

Would you get a company in to do the sound proofing? Would it be worth getting them round to hear the noise and ask their opinion if it would work?

Longhotsummers · 29/05/2025 12:35

Research sound proofing thoroughly as I’m sure sound carries via joists and floor spaces, which can’t be sound proofed.

jeaux90 · 29/05/2025 12:38

To truly mitigate the long term risk buy a detached house. I’m about to move semi rural detached myself after new neighbours behind me driving me batshit with their kids screaming all the time (and I mean actually screaming not just the joyful noise of kids playing)

@jeaux90 Wont you still hear outside loud neighbour noise with a detached tho?

OP posts:
jeaux90 · 29/05/2025 15:12

Nope I’m moving pretty rural and only have one neighbour not close by. I am very very fed up with neighbour noise for the last two summers and I want to rule it out.

deeahgwitch · 29/05/2025 17:44

Oh God that’s heartbreaking about the baby next door @ColinCaterpillarsNo1Fan

I just hope soundproofing will work as detached houses are just so expensive
