Lots of stories about boys out having a good time, and girls at home helping Mother. I was at primary in the 80s, but some of our books were probably written in the 50s. Our head teacher was ahead of her time, and this annoyed her so much that she used to make a point of swapping the names while reading them (which would be names such as “Peter”
and “Mary”).

Going out all day with 10p in case we needed to call home.

Flicking through the Radio Times to choose a TV programme to watch - made me realise how bad Youtube/Youtube Kids is.

The Corona lorry visiting the street. You'd take your empty pop bottles and be given them back full with orangeade or lemonade etc. I didn't see the cash transaction taking place so thought it was just a very generous man giving out free joy. Bangers (fireworks) that used to blow things apart and made a very loud bang, rather than the 1980s equivalent that made a dull whisper fart sound, until they were banned altogether because the only thing you should do with a banger is throw it, which was deemed dangerous by some killjoy. Proper sweets: Texan Chocolate Bars. Phantom Chews. Space Dust. Lucky Bags. And finally marvellous, kindly, interesting, loving Grandparents that baked cakes, pruned the roses, pottered in the shed or told you fascinating stories about their 6 mile walk to school they had to do every morning ....over mountains, through rivers, past the wild dog and avoiding the witch who lived in the woods by the church! Wow!.....RIP Grandad..xxxx
